{"id":2908,"date":"2008-07-22T06:19:35","date_gmt":"2008-07-22T11:19:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=2908"},"modified":"2008-07-21T14:15:52","modified_gmt":"2008-07-21T19:15:52","slug":"no-honor-among-cover-bands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=2908","title":{"rendered":"No Honor Among Cover Bands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Long ago &#8211; thirty years ago, for crying out loud &#8211; The Who was my favorite band.\u00a0 They&#8217;re still right up there.\u00a0 While I tired of some of Pete Townsend&#8217;s mid-career dramatics, <em>Who&#8217;s Next <\/em>is right up there with <em>Darkness on the Edge of Town <\/em>among my three favorite albums in rock and roll history, and<em> The Who Sell Out <\/em>and <em>Quadrophenia <\/em>are on my top forty.<\/p>\n<p>So yes.\u00a0 As a matter of fact, I&#8217;m a bit of a Who afficionado.\u00a0 Which mean, of course, that I turn a gimlet-y eye toward Who covers.<\/p>\n<p>So VH1 has been broadcasting &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vh1.com\/shows\/events\/rock_honors\/_2008\/\">Rock Honors &#8211; The Who<\/a>&#8220;.\u00a0 It was actually a bit disorienting &#8211; actually seeing <em>music<\/em> on VH1 &#8211; but I digress.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d never seen &#8220;Rock Honors&#8221;, but it&#8217;s apparently the musical equivalent of a Friar&#8217;s Roast, only with music instead of blue humor.<\/p>\n<p>The highlight of the evening was &#8220;The Who&#8221; &#8211; well, Pete Townsend and Roger Daltrey, at any event &#8211; doing some of their biggest hits.<\/p>\n<p>That was fun.\u00a0 More later.<\/p>\n<p>The most interesting part, to me anyway, was the &#8220;tribute&#8221; covers.\u00a0 Hearing them, it was hard to miss&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;how few singers are fit to carry Roger Daltrey&#8217;s gig bag.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Foo Fighters, &#8220;Young Man Blues&#8221; and &#8220;Bargain&#8221;<\/strong>: Dave Grohl is just about the most talented guy in music today. And picking Young Man Blues <em>was <\/em>a choice that&#8217;ll gladden any Who freak&#8217;s heart; the song, a cover of an obscure Mose Allison song that appeared on the classic <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Live_at_Leeds\"><em>Live at Leeds<\/em><\/a> album, smoked.\u00a0 They squandered a bit of goodwill, though, bringing Gaz Coombes of the Brit alt-rock band &#8220;Supergrass&#8221; up to sing lead on &#8220;Bargain&#8221;, one of <em>Who&#8217;s Next<\/em>&#8216;s best songs and one of my favorite Who songs ever.\u00a0 The Foos rocked, but Coombes &#8211;\u00a0who, let&#8217;s just say, has &#8220;opportunities&#8221;\u00a0as a singer &#8211;\u00a0could have been replaced by the top half of singers at a decent karaoke joint and nobody would have known better.\u00a0 Disappointing.\u00a0 Three and a half smashed Hiwatt amps (docked half a point for Coombes&#8217; &#8220;contribution&#8221;).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Incubus, &#8220;I Can See For Miles&#8221; and &#8220;I Can&#8217;t Explain&#8221;<\/strong>: Serviceable but uninspired.\u00a0 Which, with &#8220;I Can&#8217;t Explain&#8221; &#8211; a song that every band in the world has covered at least once &#8211; is\u00a0pretty much the norm.\u00a0 But with\u00a0&#8220;I Can See For Miles&#8221;, one of the five best songs of the British Invasion?\u00a0 It&#8217;ll take a good lawyer to get pled down to misdemeanor.\u00a0 Three smashed Hiwatt amps.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flaming Lips, &#8220;Amazing Journey&#8221; and &#8220;Pinball Wizard&#8221;<\/strong>: I dunno &#8211; the Lips are an off-and-on thing for me.\u00a0 All I <em>do <\/em>know is that it&#8217;d have been cool if they&#8217;d have found a song or two that fit into <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wayne_Coyne\">Wayne Coyne&#8217;s<\/a> eight note range.\u00a0 Even Bun thought it was weak, weak, weak.\u00a0 One and a half smashed Hiwatt amps.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pearl Jam, &#8220;Love Reign O&#8217;er Me&#8221; and &#8220;The Real Me&#8221;<\/strong>: On the other hand, Eddie Vedder <em>sticks <\/em>two of Daltrey&#8217;s most challenging parts; the soaring &#8220;Love Reign O&#8217;er Me&#8221; and the meatgrinder &#8220;The Real Me&#8221; from <em>Quadrophenia<\/em>.\u00a0 And they were just freaking amazing, going for a note-for-note cover on &#8220;Love&#8221; (complete with full orchestra on the string part), while opting to try to out-loud the Who on &#8220;The Real Me&#8221;.\u00a0 And dayum, it was good.\u00a0 Four and a half smashed Hiwatt amps.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tenacious D, &#8220;Squeeze Box&#8221; and something else, I think, <\/strong>because while Jack Black can be a really good actor, the whole &#8220;Tenacious D&#8221; joke wore thin on me ten years ago, and I went to answer the phone in mid-&#8220;Squeeze Box&#8221; (probably my least-favorite Who single while Keith Moon was still alive).\u00a0 Two smashed Hiwatt amps, if only because even though I&#8217;ve long tired of TD, they did the voodoo they do pretty serviceably, even though it bored me too stiff to watch all the way through.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That is all.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Long ago &#8211;
