{"id":28757,"date":"2012-07-03T06:49:49","date_gmt":"2012-07-03T11:49:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=28757"},"modified":"2012-07-03T06:49:49","modified_gmt":"2012-07-03T11:49:49","slug":"things-im-supposed-to-love-but-cant-stand-stinking-tropical-heat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=28757","title":{"rendered":"Things I&#8217;m Supposed To Love But Can&#8217;t Stand: Stinking Tropical Heat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Maybe it&#8217;s all the Beach Boys songs that are such a part of our shared cultural heritage.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it&#8217;s the residual effects of the American school system&#8217;s three months off in the summer.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it&#8217;s Madison Avenue&#8217;s effect on the cultural zeitgeist.<\/p>\n<p>But Americans are supposed to love summer.<\/p>\n<p>To Americans, summer <em>is <\/em>fun; barbecues, baseball, boating at the lake, fun fun fun in Daddy&#8217;s T-bird&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and, fact is, I like all that.<\/p>\n<p>But for most Americans, summer looks a lot more like this&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/nashvillejefferson.wordpress.com\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/nashvillejefferson.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/12\/traffic-jam.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"614\" height=\"627\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;with, on weeks like this, a heaping helping of this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/imgres?q=amazon+jungle&amp;start=15&amp;num=10&amp;um=1&amp;hl=en&amp;client=safari&amp;rls=en&amp;biw=1232&amp;bih=733&amp;tbm=isch&amp;tbnid=Q1W7NFskFUW3AM:&amp;imgrefurl=http:\/\/nature.desktopnexus.com\/wallpaper\/550589\/&amp;docid=rhaBurN0szou4M&amp;imgurl=http:\/\/static.desktopnexus.com\/thumbnails\/550589-bigthumbnail.jpg&amp;w=450&amp;h=338&amp;ei=L9vyT5mhA62A2QXr5tDOCw&amp;zoom=1&amp;iact=hc&amp;vpx=133&amp;vpy=413&amp;dur=1336&amp;hovh=194&amp;hovw=259&amp;tx=132&amp;ty=92&amp;sig=110984773684888409363&amp;page=2&amp;tbnh=154&amp;tbnw=205&amp;ndsp=20&amp;ved=1t:429,r:0,s:15,i:6\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/static.desktopnexus.com\/thumbnails\/550589-bigthumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t get me wrong. \u00a0I love summer &#8211; provided I can be violently physically active, preferably biking (with its built-in breeze).<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\">But I&#8217;m:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>one of ten Minnesotans whose family didn&#8217;t accumulate some kind of lake property back in the fifties, so summer is a matter of trying to stay functional between bouts of \u00a0non-misery<\/li>\n<li>not a teacher<\/li>\n<li>battling hay fever that is intensely aggravated by the heat and humidity, so when I say &#8220;stob&#8221; I really mean &#8220;dode go&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>a cold weather baby<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8230;and you can have this hot, steaming, humid, mangrove-swamp-dwelling dripping crap.<\/p>\n<p>That is all.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Maybe it&#8217;s all the Beach Boys songs that are such a part of our shared cultural heritage.
