{"id":28239,"date":"2012-05-31T12:10:25","date_gmt":"2012-05-31T17:10:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=28239"},"modified":"2012-05-31T07:43:49","modified_gmt":"2012-05-31T12:43:49","slug":"shot-in-the-dark-todays-news-two-weeks-ago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=28239","title":{"rendered":"<i>Shot In The Dark<\/i>: Today&#8217;s News, Two Weeks Ago"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I should change the motto of this blog; &#8220;Our Rumors Are Better Than Most Organizations&#8217; News&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Wall Street Journal <\/em>announced that Wisconsin AFSCME membership has dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Well, no. \u00a0It plummeted.<\/p>\n<p>Well, no. \u00a0It went into a flame-belching, smoking death spiral.<\/p>\n<p>Yeah. \u00a0That&#8217;s what I&#8221;m looking for.<\/p>\n<p>In the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052702304821304577436462413999718.html?mod=WSJ_hps_LEFTTopStories\">Wall Street Journal<\/a><\/em>, (via <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.powerlineblog.com\/archives\/2012\/05\/labors-armageddon.php\">Power Line<\/a><\/em>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Wisconsin membership in the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees\u2014the state\u2019s second-largest public-sector union after the National Education Association, which represents teachers\u2014fell to 28,745 in February from 62,818 in March 2011, according to a person who has viewed Afscme\u2019s figures. A spokesman for Afscme declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p>Much of that decline came from Afscme Council 24, which represents Wisconsin state workers, whose membership plunged by two-thirds to 7,100 from 22,300 last year.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This was, of course, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=27999\">reported in this space two weeks ago today<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Scuttlebutt from a trusted source who works inside AFSCME Minnesota Council 5 states that there are interesting developments in the Wisconsin AFSCME. Ever since passage and signing of the \u201cright-to-work\u201d laws in our neighboring state to the east, about 80% of those AFSCME members have \u201copted-out\u201d of paying union dues.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>My source&#8217;s anecdote got the percentage wrong, but the magnitude of the catastrophic ennui facing Wisconsin&#8217;s unions was dead-nut on.<\/p>\n<p>Certain members of the leftyblog clucking class tried to call BS on the anecdote, claiming &#8220;FACT CHECK&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Their spurious claim of &#8220;BS&#8221; is returned with two weeks&#8217; interest, um, piled on top.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Endzone happy dance aside? \u00a0I don&#8217;t get everything right. \u00a0Not every tip I get pans out. \u00a0But there is more actual bankable fact in this blog in a week than in every leftyblog in Minnesota all year.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I should change the motto of this blog; &#8220;Our Rumors Are Better Than Most Organizations&#8217; News&#8221;.
