{"id":2794,"date":"2008-06-30T06:47:53","date_gmt":"2008-06-30T11:47:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=2794"},"modified":"2008-06-30T06:54:52","modified_gmt":"2008-06-30T11:54:52","slug":"psychology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=2794","title":{"rendered":"Psychology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over at <em>Loophole<\/em> &#8211; the blog of MPR&#8217;s <em>In The Loop <\/em>series &#8211; Sanden Totten notes the apparently-peculiar power of the word &#8220;because&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><a target=\"new\" href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/blogs\/democracyinamerica\/2008\/06\/vote_for_me_because.cfm\">A study found that &#8220;because&#8221; is a powerfully persuasive word.<\/a><\/strong> The Economist blog lays out the experiment like this:<\/p>\n<p><em>In the study, a stranger approached someone waiting in line to use a photocopier and asked, &#8220;Excuse me, I have five pages. May I use the Xerox machine?&#8221; This resulted in 60% of people agreeing to let the stranger go ahead of them. But when the stranger asked instead, &#8220;May I use the Xerox machine, because I&#8217;m in a rush?&#8221;, 94% of people complied. And even when the given reason was meaningless&#8211;&#8220;May I use the Xerox machine, because I have to make copies?&#8221;&#8211;93% of people complied<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m interested in how language works, so I&#8217;m interested in this thesis.<\/p>\n<p>But I&#8217;ve noticed that &#8220;because I said so&#8221; isn&#8217;t quite as effective.<\/p>\n<p>Case in point &#8211; a piece Molly &#8220;Is It White In Here&#8221; Priesmeyer wrote last week, in her customary breezy, snarky style, about the thesis that baby boomers&#8217; home values have already evaporated.  We <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=2787\">wrote about this piece<\/a> last week, after Learned Foot noted that Priesmeyer&#8217;s source was <a href=\"http:\/\/koolaidreport.blogspot.com\/2008\/06\/i-thought-liberals-hated-monopolies.html\">funded by George Soros&#8217; &#8220;Open Society Institute&#8221;<\/a> &#8211; which also funds the <em>Minnesota &#8220;Independent&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It gets better.<\/p>\n<p>Someone &#8211; &#8220;Wabbit&#8221;, a commenter whom I happen to know, a fella very familiar with both Saint Paul real estate <em>and  <\/em>crunching numbers &#8211; questioned Priesmeyer in the comment section.<\/p>\n<p>Priesmeyer&#8217;s initial response?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The housing market crashed because of unregulated, subprime lending.
