{"id":26286,"date":"2012-02-22T12:00:28","date_gmt":"2012-02-22T18:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=26286"},"modified":"2014-12-12T14:50:08","modified_gmt":"2014-12-12T20:50:08","slug":"bruce-bruce-bruce","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=26286","title":{"rendered":"Bruce, Bruce, Bruce."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To: Bruce Springsteen<br \/>\nFrom: Mitch Berg, Once And Always Fan<br \/>\nRe: \u00a0<em>Janteloven<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Springsteen,<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been a huge fan since I was a kid. \u00a0Since before I became a conservative, even.<\/p>\n<p>When you&#8217;re a conservative Springsteen fan, you get used to the occasional churlish phumpher from some ideology-addled lib scold; &#8220;have any of you actually <em>listened <\/em>to Springsteen&#8217;s lyrics?&#8221; \u00a0To which I reply &#8220;yes &#8211; in a level of detail people like you only devote to stalking Michele Bachmann. \u00a0My question for you is, have <em>you <\/em>actually <em>listened<\/em>\u00a0to the lyrics, especially on his first five or six albums, without passing them through your PC filter?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They rarely answer.<\/p>\n<p>But the fact remains that you, starting in about &#8217;84, but escalating since 2004, have been slathering yourself and your music with politics &#8211; which, like most showbiz-lefty politics, is showy, shallow, shrill, and skin-deep.<\/p>\n<p>Like in your conversation with a Swedish radio station recently.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.news.com.au\/dailytelegraph\/timblair\/index.php\/dailytelegraph\/comments\/bjorn_to_run\/\">Tim Blair writes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Boss goes all svag and hoppl\u00f6st:<\/p>\n<p>Bruce Springsteen wants to see the United States transformed into something closer to a Swedish-style welfare state, the rock legend said Thursday &#8230;When asked if he thought the United States should be changed into something closer to a Swedish-style welfare state, Springsteen responded enthusiastically \u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now, whenever &#8220;Springsteen music&#8221; comes up in conservative circles &#8211; as in Blair&#8217;s comment section &#8211; you get a slew of standard responses; &#8220;haters&#8221;, I believe the kids call &#8217;em today. \u00a0You hear a lot of the same lines over and over:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Springsteen&#8217;s music sucks!&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Well, there&#8217;s no accounting for taste as a general rule, but&#8230;no. \u00a0That is objectively, empirically, physically false.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;He&#8217;s got no talent&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Wrong again. \u00a0He&#8217;s a great guitar player, one of the greatest songwriters of the rock and roll era (only Lennon\/McCartney, Jagger\/Richard, Leiber\/Stoller and a few others come close to the impact he&#8217;s had, commercially and artistically). \u00a0And you just try to arf out a tune, much less <em>in <\/em>tune, during a three-hour concert, even in your thirties, much less when you&#8217;re over sixty, like Bruce, much less without stripping your vocal cords bare and shooting them out your mouth with his &#8220;all lung-power&#8221; vocal technique? \u00a0You can&#8217;t do it, whoever you are. \u00a0No. \u00a0You can&#8217;t. \u00a0Any of those are talent. \u00a0Together, they an amazing combination.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Sprinsteen&#8217;s politics are dumb, and he should just shut up and sing&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Well, OK. \u00a0Now we&#8217;re getting somewhere.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Good example? \u00a0Blair points out Bruce&#8217;s paean to the fleabaggers:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It\u2019s impossible to know what young Bruce would have made of the Occupy movement, but old Bruce is down with the deadbeats:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe temper has changed. And people on the streets did it. Occupy Wall Street changed the national conversation \u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrevious to Occupy Wall Street, there was no push back at all saying this was outrageous \u2013 a basic theft that struck at the heart of what America was about, a complete disregard for the American sense of history and community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Springsteen is worth four times as much as Michael Moore, and he\u2019s still bitching.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sigh.<\/p>\n<p>It is a simple fact that the &#8220;Holy Trinity&#8221; &#8211;\u00a0<em>Born to Run, Darkness on the Edge of Town<\/em>\u00a0and<em>The River<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; are three of the greatest albums in the history of rock and roll. \u00a0There is no rational way of denying that. \u00a0Absolutely incandescent albums, crammed with moments that grab me and tens of millions of other people right in the liver, sometimes sending a shiver up my spine, others a smokey glimmer of understanding. \u00a0And not a partisan political moment in the bunch. \u00a0Not that that&#8217;d matter, necessarily &#8211; although they&#8217;d be a tangent that&#8217;d really make no sense on any of the records. \u00a0I mean, would &#8220;Backstreets&#8221; have been a better song had the estranged lovers been driven apart by evil capitalists? \u00a0Would &#8220;Rosalita&#8221; have been better if Bruce had gotten a big advance from the Carter campaign instead of the record company? \u00a0 If what (what) Candy (Candy) wanted (wanted) was (was) his talking points list?<\/p>\n<p>Of course not.<\/p>\n<p>And\u00a0<em>Nebraska, Tunnel of Love, The Rising<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle<\/em>\u00a0are all wonderful in their own right, full of things &#8211; stories, lessons, hooks, characters &#8211; that have accompanied me through good and bad times throughout my entire adult life, from junior high through 9\/11.<\/p>\n<p>And nothing&#8217;s going to change that.<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0in your own amiably earnest way, you are\u00a0turning into a thinner, less-grim, less-outrageous, but vastly wealthier Michael Moore.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the dirty little secret for conservatives who are Bruce fans:\u00a0\u00a0the more into politics he got, the less interesting his music became. <em>Born in the USA<\/em> was&#8230;good, with a few great moments. The relentlessly-political <em>Ghost of Tom Joad<\/em> got tiring. \u00a0And his work since <em>The Rising<\/em>? \u00a0Kinda rote and not that interesting, musically or thematically.<\/p>\n<p>Ah.
