There are quite a few hits &#8211; and a few misses:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><font face=\"Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"2\"><u>Machiavelli&#8217;s<\/u> <em><strong><font color=\"#ff0000\">The Prince<\/font><\/strong><\/em> was the inspiration for a long list of tyrannies (Stalin had it on his nightstand)<\/font><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yabbut, the book is an inspiration for a lot of things, including not a few prescient CEOs as well. There are lessons to learn about every corner of life in <em>The Prince. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">Call it 0 for 1 so far.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><font face=\"Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"2\">How <u>Descartes&#8217;<\/u> <em><strong><font color=\"#ff0000\">Discourse on Method<\/font><\/strong><\/em> &#8220;proved&#8221; God&#8217;s existence only by making Him a creation of our own ego<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"2\">How <u>Hobbes&#8217;<\/u> <em><strong><font color=\"#ff0000\"><span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1211058886_9\" style=\"border-bottom: #0066cc 1px dashed\">Leviathan<\/span><\/font><\/strong><\/em> led to the belief that we have a &#8220;right&#8221; to whatever we want<\/font><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course, without both of them we&#8217;d scarcely recognize modern &#8220;big-L&#8221; Liberalism.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><font face=\"Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"2\"><u>Rousseau&#8217;s<\/u> <em><font color=\"#ff0000\"><strong>Discourse on the Origin and Foundations of Inequality Among Men<\/strong><\/font><\/em>, which some have called the worst book ever written, planted the seeds of the French Revolution, the sexual revolution and family dissolution<\/font><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Never read it. More&#8217;s the pity. I&#8217;ll have to check it out.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<li><font face=\"Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"2\">How <span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1211058886_10\" style=\"border-bottom: #0066cc 1px dashed\"><u>John Stuart Mill&#8217;s<\/u> <em><strong><font color=\"#ff0000\">Utilitarianism<\/font><\/strong><\/em><\/span>, in making morality only a strictly private and practical thing, led only to a society addicted to ever more intense, barbaric, and self-destructive pleasures<\/font><\/li>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I tried to read it in college &#8211; but figured it&#8217;d do the greatest good to the most people if I just skimmed.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<li><font face=\"Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"2\">How <u>Darwin&#8217;s<\/u> <em><strong><font color=\"#ff0000\"><span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1211058886_11\" style=\"border-bottom: #0066cc 1px dashed\">The Descent of Man<\/span><\/font><\/strong><\/em> proves he intended &#8220;survival of the fittest&#8221; to be applied to human society<\/font><\/li>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Another one I got maybe twenty pages into.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><font face=\"Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"2\">How <u>Lenin&#8217;s<\/u> <em><strong><font color=\"#ff0000\">The State and Revolution<\/font><\/strong><\/em> provided the blueprint for the barbarous communist governments of the <span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1211058886_12\" style=\"border-bottom: #0066cc 1px dashed\">Soviet Union<\/span>, Eastern Europe, <span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1211058886_13\" style=\"border-bottom: #0066cc 1px dashed\">China<\/span>, <span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1211058886_14\" style=\"border-bottom: #0066cc 1px dashed\">North Korea<\/span>, <span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1211058886_15\" style=\"border-bottom: #0066cc 1px dashed\">Vietnam<\/span>, <span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1211058886_16\" style=\"border-bottom: #0066cc 1px dashed\">Cuba<\/span>, and <span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1211058886_17\" style=\"border-bottom: #0066cc 1px dashed\">Cambodia<\/span><\/font><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Much of the barbarity came from the fact that Lenin&#8217;s writing would embarass a typical blog commenter, as I recall.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<li><font face=\"Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"2\">How <u>Hitler&#8217;s<\/u> <em><strong><font color=\"#ff0000\"><span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1211058886_18\" style=\"border-bottom: #0066cc 1px dashed\">Mein Kampf<\/span><\/font><\/strong><\/em> (My Struggle) was a kind of &#8220;spiritualized Darwinism&#8221; that accounts for his genocidal anti-Semitism<\/font><\/li>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I read this one in English (as a history minor) and German (as a German minor). Either way, the overriding impression is that this stuff was that, far from &#8220;accounting for&#8221; his will to genocide, I got the impression it was way too far-out to have convinced people who weren&#8217;t already sorta disposed that way.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<li><font face=\"Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"2\">How the pansexual paradise described in <u><span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1211058886_20\" style=\"border-bottom: #0066cc 1px dashed\">Margaret Mead<\/span>&#8216;s<\/u> <em><font color=\"#ff0000\"><strong><span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1211058886_21\" style=\"border-bottom: #0066cc 1px dashed\">Coming of Age in Samoa<\/span><\/strong><\/font><\/em> turned out to be a creation of her own sexual confusions and aspirations <\/font><\/li>\n<li><font face=\"Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"2\"><u><span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1211058886_22\" style=\"background: 0% 50%; border-bottom: #0066cc 1px dashed; -moz-background-clip: -moz-initial; -moz-background-origin: -moz-initial; -moz-background-inline-policy: -moz-initial\">Alfred Kinsey<\/span>&#8216;s<\/u> <em><font color=\"#ff0000\"><strong><span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1211058886_23\" style=\"background: 0% 50%; border-bottom: #0066cc 1px dashed; -moz-background-clip: -moz-initial; -moz-background-origin: -moz-initial; -moz-background-inline-policy: -moz-initial\">Sexual Behavior in the Human Male<\/span><\/strong><\/font><\/em>, in which every manner of sexual deviance is made to seem perfectly normal, was simply Kinsey himself writ large <\/font><\/li>\n<li><font face=\"Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"2\"><u>Betty Friedan&#8217;s<\/u> <em><strong><font color=\"#ff0000\"><span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1211058886_24\" style=\"border-bottom: #0066cc 1px dashed\">The Feminine Mystique<\/span><\/font><\/strong><\/em> was once again autobiography masquerading as science, in which Friedan&#8217;s attacks on the roles of &#8220;wife&#8221; and &#8220;mother&#8221; were defined by her own personality and personal conflicts<\/font><\/li>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Never read any of &#8217;em. Tried to start <em>Feminine Mystique<\/em> once. Didn&#8217;t work.<\/p>\n<p>OK. With that out of the way &#8211; I&#8217;ve said it before; I may be the only person in the past sixty years to have converted to conservatism at the urging of my college English major advisor. Reading books like Solzhenitzyn&#8217;s <em>The Gulag Archipelago, <\/em>Dostoyevskii&#8217;s <em>Crime and Punishment, The Possessed, <\/em>and <em>The Brothers Karamazov, <\/em>Tolstoii&#8217;s <em>War and Peace, <\/em>Paul Johnson&#8217;s <em>Modern Times<\/em>, and others (including a healthy dose of P.J. O&#8217;Rourke) gave me a huge push from the 1980 me (who didn&#8217;t much care for Jimmy Carter, but feared Ronald Reagan) to the 1984 me (who voted for Reagan, but didn&#8217;t tell anyone, just to be safe).<\/p>\n<p>But there was an equal negative push as well; my sophomore year, I took a class in &#8220;Freud, Nietzsche and Marx&#8221;, an upper-division philosophy class taught by a guy who left the academy the next year to go work as a liberation theologian with the Sandinistas.<\/p>\n<p>And&#8230;yow. The most depressing class of my life. And it focused, among others, on&#8230;:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<li><font face=\"Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"2\">Why <u><span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1211058886_19\" style=\"border-bottom: #0066cc 1px dashed\">Sigmund Freud<\/span>&#8216;s<\/u> <em><strong><font color=\"#ff0000\">The Future of an Illusion<\/font><\/strong><\/em> was itself a &#8220;projection&#8221; of Freud&#8217;s desire to discredit religion by the most salacious conjectures he could come up with.<\/font><\/li>\n<li><font face=\"Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"2\">How <u>Nietzsche&#8217;s<\/u> <em><font color=\"#ff0000\"><strong>Beyond Good and Evil<\/strong><\/font><\/em> issued the call to a world ruled solely by the <strong><font color=\"#ff0000\">&#8220;Will to Power&#8221;<\/font><\/strong><\/font><\/li>\n<li><font face=\"Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"2\">Why <u>Marx and Engels<\/u>&#8216; <em><strong><font color=\"#ff0000\">Communist Manifesto<\/font><\/strong><\/em> is one of the most malicious book ever written<\/font><\/font><\/li>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Also Freud&#8217;s <em>Moses and Monotheism, <\/em>Nietsche&#8217;s <em>Also Sprach Zarathustra <\/em>and <em>Ecce Homo<\/em> and Marx\/Engels&#8217; <em>Das Kapital<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>And as I read all of them, I could feel any lingering fabian liberalism left in my consciousness being pummeled as crowds of rhetorical synapses cheered with joy.<\/p>\n<p>I could do a book by book review &#8211; but in fact, the past 24 years of my life <em>are <\/em>that review.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote \/><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This stuff is crack for an English major; Ed sends me a reference to this new book, &#8220;Ten Books that Screwed Up the Western World&#8220;.
