{"id":25516,"date":"2012-01-11T06:53:20","date_gmt":"2012-01-11T12:53:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=25516"},"modified":"2020-12-21T05:30:03","modified_gmt":"2020-12-21T11:30:03","slug":"everyones-a-pirate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=25516","title":{"rendered":"Everyone&#8217;s A Pirate!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s not the game-changer for this campaign. \u00a0But it could shave off a lot of votes for a lot of candidates.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the Stop Online Piracy Act. \u00a0Posited as a means of protecting copyrights and against counterfeit drugs, the act &#8211; sponsored by Lamar Smith, with a slew of co-hosts &#8211; is rife with opportunity for abuse; it would make it frighteningly easy for government to censor online content on any dubious grounds it sees fit to find; it&#8217;ll make the user-content industry (think Youtube, Flickr and, potentially, any blog) exceptionally hazardous &#8211; not for abusers of copyrights, but for the service providers themselves. \u00a0 It&#8217;s possible, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\/deeplinks\/2011\/11\/whats-blacklist-three-sites-sopa-could-put-risk\">Electronic Frontier Foundation<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdt.org\/blogs\/david-sohn\/2710house-copyright-bill-casts-dangerously-broad-net\">Center for Democracy and Technology<\/a>, for as little as a single complaint to shut down, say, Hot Air (and we all know what side is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=16234\">full of complainers who just <em>loooooooooove <\/em>to use the bureaucracy to stifle debate<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>And\u00a0<a style=\"color: #1b8be0; font: normal normal normal 15px\/normal 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 1.625; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/stories\/0112\/71284.html\">the issue is gaining traction among those who pay attention to these things<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>To the ranks of same-sex marriage, tax cuts and illegal immigration, add this to the list of polarizing political issues of Election 2012: the Stop Online Piracy Act.<\/p>\n<p>The hot-button anti-piracy legislation that sparked a revolt online is starting to become a political liability for some of SOPA\u2019s major backers. Fueled by Web activists and online fundraising tools, challengers are using the bill to tag its congressional supporters as backers of Big Government \u2014 and raise campaign cash while they\u2019re at it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Al Franken and &#8211; as luck would have it, the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/tech.mn\/news\/tag\/senator-amy-klobuchar\/\">up-for-election Amy Klobuchar<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; both support SOPA. \u00a0Elements of the left have been beating on them, especially on A-Klo; both are, of course, in the bag for Hollywood.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s time to join in the bashing!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s not the game-changer for this campaign. \u00a0But it could shave off a lot of votes for a lot of candidates.
