{"id":2529,"date":"2008-05-08T05:14:21","date_gmt":"2008-05-08T10:14:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=2529"},"modified":"2008-05-08T05:14:21","modified_gmt":"2008-05-08T10:14:21","slug":"beach-reading","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=2529","title":{"rendered":"Beach Reading"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m pleased as punch to note that two of my favorite, er, let&#8217;s say &#8220;niche&#8221; publications are still in business.<\/p>\n<p>I was working at Cray Research fifteen years ago when I encountered <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jir.com\/\">The Journal of Irreproducible Results<\/a>, which is\u00a0 to science what The Onion is to news.\u00a0 What I <em>didn&#8217;t<\/em> know was that the JIR&#8217;s history goes back over half a century.\u00a0 And while their usual fare revolves around parodies of scientific publications (and since I was a technical writer at the time, the format certainly resonated), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jir.com\/pullet.html\">this bit here<\/a> is near and dear to any blogger that runs a comment section.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wittenburgdoor.com\/\">The Wittenburg Door <\/a>and I go back even further; a high school classmate of mine served as its editor back in the late eighties. \u00a0 It&#8217;s like&#8230;well, here&#8217;s another <em>Onion<\/em> reference; it&#8217;s <em>The Onion<\/em> of religious writing.\u00a0 The Door has always been a hand-to-mouth project &#8211; but when it occurs to me to go read it (every couple of years, lately) it&#8217;s always a great read.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m pleased as punch to note that two of my favorite, er, let&#8217;s say &#8220;niche&#8221; publications are still in business.
