{"id":2380,"date":"2009-02-13T13:00:22","date_gmt":"2009-02-13T18:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=2380"},"modified":"2009-02-12T19:01:35","modified_gmt":"2009-02-13T00:01:35","slug":"tony-butler","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=2380","title":{"rendered":"Happy Birthday, Tony Butler"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s Tony Butler&#8217;s birthday today.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Tony who?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>No, not the pitcher. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tony_Butler_(musician)\"><em>This <\/em>Tony Butler<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2354\/2156063216_4c572bc249.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re forgiven for not having heard of Butler if you&#8217;re not seriously into unsung musical heroes.\u00a0 But that&#8217;s certainly Butler.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s most famous as the long-time bassist for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=2334\">Big Country<\/a>.\u00a0 Before, during and after that, he served as a session bassist, most notably in concert with longtime pal and bandmate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=2379\">Mark Brzezicki<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.drummerworld.com\/pics\/drum\/dpa14\/markbrzezicki7.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the late seventies, he edged into the limelight as part of &#8220;On The Air&#8221;, a band with Brzezicki and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=1567\">Simon Townsend<\/a>,\u00a0 younger brother of The Who&#8217;s Pete Townsend.\u00a0 From there, the Butler\/Brzezicki rhythm section gigged with all manner of British heavyweights, including Simon&#8217;s <em>Sweet Sound<\/em>, the elder Townsend&#8217;s classic <em>Empty Glass <\/em>and <em>All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes<\/em>, the Pretenders (with whom he recorded the hit &#8220;Back On The Chain Gang&#8221; in the wake of Pete Farndon&#8217;s death) and many more.<\/p>\n<p>Bass players are, by nature, support players (leaving out the odd Geddy-Lee-like bass-playing frontman or John-Entwistle-like superstar).\u00a0 And Butler was a support monster &#8211; not only as a very capable bass player, but as a seamless yet distinctive backup singer.\u00a0 Listen to the greatest moments for Big Country or Simon Townsend&#8217;s first album; right behind Townsend or Stuart Adamson, singing his trademark, &#8220;loosely-tight&#8221; dropped fifth harmonies, was Butler.\u00a0 Most casual music fans don&#8217;t give a second thought to backup vocals &#8211; which, in a sense, is as it should be, since great backup vocals reinforce the lead without drawing attention from it.<\/p>\n<p>But think about it.\u00a0 Would &#8220;In A Big Country&#8221; or &#8220;Where The Rose Is Sown&#8221; been the same had their hooklines been nothing more than Adamson&#8217;s earnest yelp?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"338\" width=\"504\" src=\"http:\/\/pro.corbis.com\/images\/DZ004174.jpg?size=67&#038;uid={e786d6b1-36b5-4f6e-b176-6dbaece099e8}\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Would\u00a0 &#8220;I Am The Answer&#8221; packed the same on-the-edge thrill with just Townsend&#8217;s thin tenor?<\/p>\n<p>No &#8211; the hooks &#8211; and the songs built around them &#8211; are memorable <em>because <\/em>of Tony Butler&#8217;s support; seamless and unostentatious, and yet tense and musically-inventive and unique and just-plain-<em>thrilling.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So happy birthday, Tony Butler.\u00a0 And though I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ve heard it a zillion times, please, stay alive.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s Tony Butler&#8217;s birthday today. &#8220;Tony who?&#8221; No, not the pitcher.
