{"id":23659,"date":"2011-11-15T12:30:40","date_gmt":"2011-11-15T18:30:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=23659"},"modified":"2011-11-15T07:54:16","modified_gmt":"2011-11-15T13:54:16","slug":"the-real-eighties-banging-drums-and-old-guitars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=23659","title":{"rendered":"The Real Eighties:  Banging Drums And Old Guitars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I noted (briefly) yesterday, once you get past the hairdos and the synth-pop and the hair-metal, the eighties were a time when American rock and roll went way way back to its roots.<\/p>\n<p>And hardly anyone dug into those roots harder and further than four Latinos and a Jewish writer from Los Angeles who&#8217;d spent years as a bar band before an ever-so-brief flash of top-40 success, followed by three decades of fanatic cult fandom, Los Lobos.<\/p>\n<p>Los Lobos is most famous for &#8220;La Bamba&#8221;, a mega-hit in 1988. \u00a0But before that they&#8217;d had minor hits, both English (the glorious &#8220;Will The Wolf Survive?&#8221;)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lJVsUMKftMo\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and Spanish:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XYLirU_oY3Q\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>And they tied &#8217;em both together into one of the best live <i>and<\/i> and studio bands of the last thirty years, to say nothing of the past thirty years.  <\/p>\n<p>So I like to throw them at my daughter when she starts yapping about the &#8220;Safety Dance&#8221; &#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As I noted (briefly) yesterday, once you get past the hairdos and the synth-pop and the hair-metal, the eighties were a time when American rock and roll went way way back to its roots.
