{"id":23650,"date":"2011-11-21T13:00:17","date_gmt":"2011-11-21T19:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=23650"},"modified":"2011-11-20T22:51:36","modified_gmt":"2011-11-21T04:51:36","slug":"the-real-eighties-beep-oink-squawk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=23650","title":{"rendered":"The Real Eighties:  Beep Oink Squawk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>All this month as we go through eighties music, I&#8217;ve been trying to establish that the one great stereotype of eighties music &#8211; that synth-pop was the dominant genre of the decade &#8211; is, at thirty years remove, overrated.<\/p>\n<p>Still, it is a fact that the ubuiquity of inexpensive new technology took a genre that was a pseudoacademic curiosity in the late sixties&#8230;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 330px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/artsites.ucsc.edu\/EMS\/music\/equipment\/synthesizers\/analog\/moog\/moog.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/artsites.ucsc.edu\/EMS\/music\/equipment\/synthesizers\/analog\/moog\/moog.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"292\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">A 1970 Moog synthesizer<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8230;and an expensive art project in the seventies, became a mass-market musical commodity in the eighties.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oldcrows.net\/~oldcrow\/synth\/tan\/yamaha_dx7.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oldcrows.net\/~oldcrow\/synth\/tan\/dx7_left.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"359\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">A 1983 Yamaha DX7. Digital, light, reliable, and $2,000, it was the basis for much of the sound of the1980s.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It got to the point, with instruments like the Yamaha DX and Roland Juno-series synths, that synths became replacements for conventional instruments like pianos, basses,organs, and (more or less) horn and sections.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"The Roland Juno 6\" src=\"http:\/\/www.synthmania.com\/Roland%20Juno-106\/Images\/Roland_Juno-106_front.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And in and among the &#8220;Men Without Hats&#8221; and &#8220;EBN-OZNs&#8221; and other assembly-line synth-pop detritus, there were a few artists that stood out, to others, and to me.<\/p>\n<p>There was Thomas Dolby, most famous for the iconic synth-pop top-forty hit &#8220;Blinded Me With Science&#8221;.  Here&#8217;s a recent performance of &#8220;One Of Our Submarines&#8221;, another early &#8217;80s tune&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/n3atTP6hqlg\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Pete Townshend once called Dolby the first synth-pop artist he encountered who made the synthesizer sound like there were actual humans involved.<\/p>\n<p>I remember having endless arguments about the Pet Shop Boys back in 1986.  I didn&#8217;t  get &#8217;em back then.  <\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/p3j2NYZ8FKs\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Gotta confess: I dug A-Ha.  Partly the fact that they were Norwegian, partly the cool\/iconic rotoscope video&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-zOzMR6J08w\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and partly because I just plain liked a good chunk of their supernaturally-accessible brit-via-Oslo pop.  So sue me.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, not all technological development involved new, or entirely new, technology.  Germany&#8217;s <i>Einsturzende Neubauten<\/i>, for example,which may have been the inspiration for Mike Meyers&#8217; &#8220;Sprockets mit Dieter&#8221; bit on SNL, mixed industrial noise, with&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VZsCvABTX90\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;well, more industrial noise and synths, among other things.  <\/p>\n<p>More tomorrow. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>All this month as we go through eighties music, I&#8217;ve been trying to establish that the one great stereotype of eighties music &#8211; that synth-pop was the dominant genre of the decade &#8211; is, at thirty years remove, overrated.
