{"id":2337,"date":"2008-04-03T02:15:02","date_gmt":"2008-04-03T07:15:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=2337"},"modified":"2008-03-29T15:24:35","modified_gmt":"2008-03-29T20:24:35","slug":"it-was-twenty-years-ago-today-part-lxxiv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=2337","title":{"rendered":"It Was Twenty Years Ago Today, Part LXXIV"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was 2AM, Thursday, April 3, 1988.<\/p>\n<p>The previous day had been pretty much like every other day, these days.<\/p>\n<p>I had gotten up up around ten.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d started keeping my radio station calling to Mondays; the long-distance bills were sorta out of hand, if I didn&#8217;t ration things.\u00a0 And there was really not much going on, anyway.<\/p>\n<p>I walked Mookie.\u00a0 I went to the library.<\/p>\n<p>I drove out to City Limits, the bowling-alley bar in Rosemount, and worked the evening.\u00a0 It was a slow, dull evening, like all weekday evenings at Jams.<\/p>\n<p>I drove home, stopping at Perkins in Apple Valley, at the corner of Cedar and 42, to grab an idle late-night snack.\u00a0 I loved the potato pancakes &#8211; although I never figured out why they served &#8217;em with syrup.\u00a0 Potato pancakes were like fluffy hash browns; we all know that ketchup is the only acceptable topping.<\/p>\n<p>It was probably 2:15AM as I went to the counter to pay.\u00a0 I took out my checkbook and filled it in&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;April 3.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=250\">It&#8217;d been a year<\/a> since I&#8217;d gotten whacked at KSTP.\u00a0 One year to the day.<\/p>\n<p>And I&#8217;d not made one millimeter of progress.\u00a0 Things had gotten worse, in fact.\u00a0 I hadn&#8217;t had a voice-over job since October; I hadn&#8217;t sold a newspaper article since January.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, I&#8217;d stopped trying to do either. \u00a0 Pointing that out to myself made it worse.<\/p>\n<p>The anniversary sat in my stomach like an undigested golf ball as I drove back to Saint Paul.<\/p>\n<p><em>Now <\/em>I was depressed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was 2AM, Thursday, April 3, 1988.
