{"id":23114,"date":"2011-09-26T05:11:02","date_gmt":"2011-09-26T10:11:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=23114"},"modified":"2011-09-25T10:21:29","modified_gmt":"2011-09-25T15:21:29","slug":"is-there-some-benefactor-somewhere","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=23114","title":{"rendered":"Is There Some Benefactor, Somewhere&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;that pays liberal pundits to be gratuitously smug, patronizingand condescending?<\/p>\n<p>In an editorial in the Fairbault Daily News, editor Jaci Smith\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/faribault.com\/content\/let-local-government-choose\">goes all Mommy on us<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You can\u2019t have it both ways.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Although Smith does, in fact, try to have it both ways. \u00a0We&#8217;ll get back to that later.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This was a lesson I learned early in life.<\/p>\n<p>I coveted a friend\u2019s toy and wanted her to let me play with it, yet I never wanted to share my favorite toy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t have it both ways,\u201d my mom used to tell me. \u201cEither you play only with your own toys or you play with others\u2019 shared toys and you share yours as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A good lesson but apparently one that some state legislators haven\u2019t learned.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Smith &#8211; like the rest of the peanut gallery of outstate editorial writers who seem to be longing to sit for a day in Lori Sturdevant&#8217;s seat &#8211; says Steve Drazkowski and Pat Garofalo, who&#8217;ve been warning voters that their school districts <em>got <\/em>increases, and urging them to vote down referenda to increase taxes yet more, should just shut up:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Garofalo and Drazkowski claim that the state boosted spending to school districts in the budget passed this summer and that the 133 districts statewide seeking levy increases (or the continuation of an existing one) are \u201cdouble dipping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite these very generous funding increases \u2014 paid for by you, the taxpayer \u2014 133 school districts statewide are considering asking their local property taxpayers to pony up even more money \u2014 the largest number that would call for a vote in a decade,\u201d Drazkowski wrote in a recent newsletter.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Smith says it&#8217;s a local thing,and state pols should just. Butt. Out.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Thankfully, Faribault\u2019s GOP Sen. Mike Parry disagrees. He said in a recent interview with the Daily News that referendums are local issues, to be handled locally.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That&#8217;s true, as far as it goes. \u00a0But here, Editor Smith, er, tries to have it both ways. \u00a0Garofalo and Drazkowski are exercising their First Amendment rights to tell people the facts as they see them. \u00a0As Legislators, they have no <em>control <\/em>over how local districts run their affairs, or what local voters vote for. \u00a0But they have the same right to speak that anyone &#8211; me, Bud Froemking at the liquor store in Faribault, or Jaci Smith for that matter &#8211; has. \u00a0Both have the advantage of the bully pulpit of elected office &#8211; which doesn&#8217;t negate their right to speak&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;any more than that of the Teachers Unions and the other groups from outside Faribault that will be speaking, and no doubt ponying up money, to try to push the levy through.<\/p>\n<p>So since <del>Mommy<\/del> Editor Smith has reminded us that we can&#8217;t have it both ways, I wonder which one she&#8217;ll pick?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;that pays liberal pundits to be gratuitously smug, patronizingand condescending?
