{"id":226,"date":"2006-12-19T06:48:09","date_gmt":"2006-12-19T12:48:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php\/2006\/12\/19\/the-last-landing\/"},"modified":"2006-12-28T13:27:18","modified_gmt":"2006-12-28T19:27:18","slug":"the-last-landing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=226","title":{"rendered":"The Last Landing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I wonder which is more strange; that today, December 19, it&#8217;s been <em>34 years <\/em>since man was last on the moon&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;or that so few people remember the mission &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apollo_17\">Apollo 17<\/a> &#8211; that flew it:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Crew members were Eugene Cernan, commander; Ron Evans, command module pilot; and Harrison Schmitt, lunar module pilot.<\/p>\n<p>The landing site for this mission was on the southeastern rim of the Mare Serenitatis, in the southwestern Montes Taurus. This was a dark mantle between three high, steep massifs, in an area known as the Taurus-Littrow region. Pre-mission photographs showed boulders deposited along the bases of the mountains, which could provide bedrock samples.
