{"id":22045,"date":"2011-08-30T12:00:56","date_gmt":"2011-08-30T17:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=22045"},"modified":"2011-08-30T11:02:23","modified_gmt":"2011-08-30T16:02:23","slug":"time-for-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=22045","title":{"rendered":"Time For Change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the news that organizers of a &#8220;Labor Day&#8221; parade have <a href=\"http:\/\/pajamasmedia.com\/tatler\/2011\/08\/29\/republicans-banned-from-labor-day-celebration\/\">disinvited Republican elected officials in Wisconsin<\/a>&#8230;.:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Organizers of the Labor Day parade in Wausau say Republican lawmakers aren\u2019t welcome in this year\u2019s event&#8230;Council president Randy Radtke says they choose not to invite elected officials who have \u201copenly attacked worker\u2019s rights\u201d&#8230;Republican Rep. Sean Duffy\u2019s office received notice from parade organizers this week that no Republicans would be invited to walk in the parade. Duffy\u2019s chief of staff, Brandon Moody, tells WAOW-TV the congressman was hoping differences could be set aside for the family-friendly event.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230;I have to wonder &#8211; is this the left&#8217;s latest Borg-hive meme? \u00a0That Labor Day is for people who suck up to &#8220;Labor?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Could be &#8211; the meme is popping up in\u00a0Minnesota, too. \u00a0Yesterday, Representative Carly Melin &#8211; a former Hamline U law student whom the DFL quickly transplanted from St. Paul to Tony Sertich&#8217;s old district up on the Range at the last possible second to run as the DFL&#8217;s anointed candidate, but don&#8217;t you <em>dare <\/em>call her a carpetbagger &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/carlymelin\/status\/108199715606241280\">wrote on Twitter yesterday<\/a>&#8230;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Will #mnleg GOP members who attacked collective bargaining rights all session be celebrating Labor Day? Do they know the history? #unions<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Hm. \u00a0So &#8220;Labor Day&#8221; is not so much for union people, but for people who are compliant with Big Labor&#8217;s political agenda?<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps it&#8217;s time to abolish the Labor Day holiday. \u00a0Stop me if I&#8217;m wrong, but national holidays are for the nation &#8211; <em>everyone<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; and not just the glorification of special interest groups.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Look &#8211; unlike most DFLers, I&#8217;ve been a union member. \u00a0And unlike most of them, I know the history of the holiday;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Labor_Day\">Labor Day<\/a> was passed by Grover Cleveland and Congress in 1894 to assuage unionist anger after a series of violent strikes, at a time when they served a very legitimate purpose in the market &#8211; to see that workers were paid, and could work without getting killed or maimed on the job.<\/p>\n<p>Today, organized labor largely exists to inveigle government to keep feeding an undisturbed stream of entitlements to generally well-to-do government employees.<\/p>\n<p>Or if we don&#8217;t abolish the holiday, maybe we should change the name. \u00a0Call it &#8220;You Shall Work &#8216;Til You&#8217;re 70 So We Can Retire At 55&#8221; Day. \u00a0Or, less pointedly, &#8220;Back To School Day&#8221;, or &#8220;Beginning of Football Season Day&#8221;, or maybe a fall equinox party with people dancing around an aluminum pole for all I care. \u00a0The point being if the Wisconsin unions and Carly Melin want to use a federal and state holiday to enforce compliance with the unions&#8217; demands, then maybe it shouldn&#8217;t be a federal and state holiday at all .<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d say call it &#8220;Entrepreneur Day&#8221;, but nobody would get the day off&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With the news that organizers of a &#8220;Labor Day&#8221; parade have disinvited Republican elected officials in Wisconsin&#8230;.: Organizers of the Labor Day parade in Wausau say Republican lawmakers aren\u2019t welcome in this year\u2019s event&#8230;Council president Randy Radtke says they choose not to invite elected officials who have \u201copenly attacked worker\u2019s rights\u201d&#8230;Republican Rep.
