{"id":2044,"date":"2008-01-30T12:25:17","date_gmt":"2008-01-30T17:25:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=2044"},"modified":"2011-09-01T07:57:55","modified_gmt":"2011-09-01T12:57:55","slug":"words-mean-what-jim-oberstar-says-they-mean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=2044","title":{"rendered":"Words Mean What Jim Oberstar <i>Says<\/i> They Mean"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An emailer notes that Jim Oberstar is going to provide cover for the Tics and their premature indictment of the Taxpayers League, the Governor and the Incredible Stable Gas Tax for the collapse of the 35W River Bridge.<\/p>\n<p>He\u00a0 points us to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/politics\/national\/congress\/14123862.html\">this article<\/a> in the Strib (emphases added):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1201709575_1\" style=\"cursor: hand; border-bottom: #0066cc 1px dashed\">Minnesota<\/span> Democrat Jim Oberstar, chairman of the<br \/>\nHouse Transportation Committee, fired off a critical<br \/>\nletter to the head of the <span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1201709575_2\" style=\"background: none transparent scroll repeat 0% 0%; cursor: hand; border-bottom: #0066cc 1px dashed\">National Transportation<br \/>\nSafety Board<\/span> (NTSB) on Wednesday, <strong>saying it was<br \/>\n&#8220;highly inappropriate&#8221; for him to dismiss corrosion<br \/>\nand poor maintenance as possible causes for the<br \/>\nInterstate 35W bridge collapse<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Seems to me that Oberstar is pressuring the NTSB to<br \/>\nmake sure that their final conclusion includes some<br \/>\nmention of corrosion or maintenance.\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If the facts don&#8217;t support you, argue the law (of physics); if the law of physics doesn&#8217;t uspport you, argue the facts.\u00a0 If the facts and the law are against you, argue like hell.<\/p>\n<p>Call it &#8220;trying to create reasonable doubt&#8221; &#8211; although the doubts Oberstar is trying\u00a0to create are in\u00a0no way reasonable.\u00a0 Bridges don&#8217;t fall because of ethical lapses or political choices or semiotic miscues; they fall\u00a0due to ineluctible\u00a0failures in material or design.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Back to Oberstar:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The board has not determined whether the design of<br \/>\nthe plates was the primary cause of the accident<br \/>\ncompared to other possible causes such as corrosion<br \/>\nand poor maintenance,&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His earlier statements just after the NTSB press<br \/>\nconference also imply he&#8217;s expecting different results<br \/>\nin the final version.\u00a0 Oberstar is the head of the<br \/>\ntransportation committee which has over site of the<br \/>\nNTSB.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In other words, Oberstar would seem to be playing to the nutroots; people who&#8217;ll believe any crap you shove in front of them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Read and decide for yourself:\u00a0 here&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ntsb.gov\/speeches\/rosenker\/mvr080115.html\">the transcript of the NTSB press conference<\/a>.\u00a0 See what references to maintenance or corrosion or gas taxes you can find coming from <strong>the engineers<em> <\/em><\/strong>who contributed to the findings, so far.<\/p>\n<p>The emailer notes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>At no time does the NTSB claim to know the<br \/>\ncause of the bridge collapse.\u00a0 The purpose of the<br \/>\npress conference is to issue a &#8220;safety recommendation&#8221;<br \/>\nto the Federal Highway Administration with regards to<br \/>\nre-performing bridge design calculations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ntsb.gov\/Recs\/letters\/2008\/H08_1.pdf\">NTSB safety advisory report<\/a> (not a preliminary report)<\/p>\n<p>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ntsb.gov\/Recs\/letters\/2008\/H08_1_Design_Adequacy_Report.pdf\">here if you&#8217;re a bridge engineer<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The emailer also directs us to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oberstar.house.gov\/\/index.asp?Type=B_PRDE={64C4E8A0-3EDB-4E30-927F-EE491B876148}\">this bit on Rep. Oberstar&#8217;s website<\/a>, and this quote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Congressman Jim Oberstar says that the preliminary findings by the <span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1201709517_1\" style=\"background: none transparent scroll repeat 0% 0%; cursor: hand; border-bottom: #0066cc 1px dashed\">National Transportation Safety Board <\/span>(NTSB) may help prev ent another tragedy like the I-35W bridge collapse.\u00a0 \u201cThe NTSB is right to take aggressive action to release any information about the bridge collapse.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Unless it doesn&#8217;t provide cover to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=1131\">Alice &#8220;The Phantom&#8221; Hausman, E-Tink<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=1624\">Nick Coleman<\/a>, and the DFL and their other water carriers.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to send an email to Oberstar&#8217;s office asking for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll keep you posted.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An emailer notes that Jim Oberstar is going to provide cover for the Tics and their premature indictment of the Taxpayers League, the Governor and the Incredible Stable Gas Tax for the collapse of the 35W River Bridge.
