{"id":19329,"date":"2011-04-12T21:33:15","date_gmt":"2011-04-13T03:33:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=19329"},"modified":"2011-04-12T21:33:15","modified_gmt":"2011-04-13T03:33:15","slug":"trumped-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=19329","title":{"rendered":"Trumped Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.richguysclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/donald-trump-bad-hair-day.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"118\" height=\"169\" \/>The Donald leads the field.\u00a0 I blame women and independents.<\/p>\n<p>Are his 15 minutes of this election cycle up yet?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It may only be a poll of 385 Republicans nation-wide, but carrying the increasingly limited gravatis of CNN as the poll&#8217;s sponsor, few news outlets will miss the opportunity to write the following headline: <a href=\"http:\/\/race42012.com\/2011\/04\/12\/poll-watch-cnnopinion-research-2012-republican-nomination-survey-3\/#more-34285\">&#8220;Trump GOP&#8217;s frontrunner.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/argojournal.blogspot.com\/2011\/04\/poll-watch-cnnopinion-research-2012.html\"><strong>CNN\/Opinion Research 2012 Republican Nomination Survey <\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Donald Trump 19% [10%]<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Mike Huckabee 19% [19%] {21%} <\/strong><strong>(21%)<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>[14%] {<strong>24%<\/strong>} (17%)<\/li>\n<li>Sarah Palin 12% [12%] {19%} (14%) [18%] {15%} (18%)<\/li>\n<li>Newt Gingrich 11% [14%] {10%} (12%) [15%] {14%} (8%)<\/li>\n<li>Mitt Romney 11% [18%] {18%} (20%) [<strong>21%<\/strong>] {20%} (<strong>22%<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>Ron Paul 7% [8%] {7%} (7%) [10%] {8%} (8%)<\/li>\n<li>Michele Bachmann 5%<\/li>\n<li>Mitch Daniels 3% [3%] {3%}<\/li>\n<li>Tim Pawlenty 2% [3%] {3%} (3%) [3%] {2%} (5%)<\/li>\n<li>Rick Santorum 2% [3%] {1%} (2%) [2%] {3%} (5%)<\/li>\n<li>Haley Barbour 0% [1%] {3%} (3%) [3%] {1%} (1%)<\/li>\n<li>Someone else (vol.) 3% [4%] {5%} (7%) [6%] {5%} (8%)<\/li>\n<li>None\/No one (vol.) 4% [3%] {4%} (4%) [0%] {5%} (2%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Trump may be nothing more in the current field than a name ID with\u00a0an awful comb-over, but the Trump Brand apparently has some political value &#8211; especially with Republican-leaning independents and women.\u00a0 Trump is the first choice of both demographics in the poll, with 24% and 23% respectively.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The poll may well represent the zenith of Trump&#8217;s 2012 candidacy.\u00a0 On the same day that Trump may capture headlines with his likely dubious polling &#8220;lead&#8221;, the real estate mogul of New York City politically shot himself in the foot &#8211; twice.\u00a0 First, by publicly claiming that he&#8217;d run as an independent if the GOP didn&#8217;t nominate him and secondly, by <a href=\"http:\/\/gothamist.com\/2011\/04\/12\/trump_could_run_as_independent_in_2.php#\">writing scathing notes to a Vanity Fair blogger<\/a> over a profile.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/gothamist.com\/attachments\/jen\/2011_04_donjtrump.jpg\" alt=\"2011_04_donjtrump.jpg\" width=\"518\" height=\"449\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Harry Truman once <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rjgeib.com\/heroes\/truman\/truman-daughter.html\">wrote an angry letter that caught the public&#8217;s eye<\/a>.\u00a0 Of course Truman, writing to Washington Post music critic Paul Hume, was defending his daughter against what he believed to be an unfair assault.\u00a0 Truman&#8217;s critique was equal parts Oscar Wilde and Rocky Marciano\u00a0in it&#8217;s prose.\u00a0 And to channel Lloyd Bentsen: Mr. Trump, you&#8217;re no Harry Truman.<\/p>\n<p>Donald&#8217;s &#8220;Trumpisms&#8221; have only continued in recent <a href=\"http:\/\/gothamist.com\/2011\/04\/12\/trump_could_run_as_independent_in_2.php#\">interviews<\/a>.\u00a0 In addition to his &#8220;birtherism&#8221; fetish, he&#8217;s \u201conly interested in Libya if we take the oil,&#8221; &#8220;I would not leave Iraq and let Iran take over the oil,&#8221; and &#8220;I would tell China that you\u2019re either going to shape up, or I\u2019m going to tax you at 25% for all the products you send into this country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Trump has said he&#8217;ll wait until June to make a decision &#8211; or perhaps until &#8220;The Apprentice&#8221; gets off the <a href=\"http:\/\/tvdonewright.com\/2011-2012-preview\/2011-2012-renewal-pilots-cancellation-chart\/\">TV renewal bubble <\/a>and signed for another season on NBC.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Donald leads the field.\u00a0 I blame women and independents.
