I’m hoping to take the kids to New York this coming spring to attend my stepson’s wedding.<\/p>\n

Of course, there’s a certain amount of culture shock, going from Saint Paul to New York…<\/p>\n

…well, no. There’s usually some of it for people who come from New York to Saint Paul, but I’ve observed rather little of it from people going the other way. The big sticking point would seem to be language.<\/p>\n

So – for the children – I’m going to present this brief primer on translating key Minnesota terms to New York-style English.<\/p>\n

You’re welcome, kids:<\/p>\n

Minnesota term<\/strong>: “You betcha”
\nNew York translation<\/strong>: “Fuhgeddaboutit”<\/p>\n

Minnesota term<\/strong>: “Oofda”
\nNew York translation<\/strong>: “Mo********er!”<\/p>\n

Minnesota term<\/strong>: “Sheesh, it’s cold”
\nNew York translation<\/strong>: “Jeezus H. Christ, the Yankees suck”<\/p>\n

Minnesota term<\/strong>: “Diablo Cody”
\nNew York translation<\/strong>: “Brett Easton Ellis”<\/p>\n
