{"id":1708,"date":"2007-11-28T05:00:40","date_gmt":"2007-11-28T10:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=1708"},"modified":"2007-11-28T05:00:40","modified_gmt":"2007-11-28T10:00:40","slug":"the-wisdum-of-bumper-stickers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=1708","title":{"rendered":"The Wisdum of Bumper Stickers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;ve taken our shots at liberal bumper stickers in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Emil from Atomic Trousers has taken the logical next step; a <a href=\"http:\/\/atomictrousers.blogspot.com\/2007\/11\/bask-in-bumper-sticker-wisdom.html\">top ten (?) list<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To wit (with some <em>post-facto<\/em> nominations of my own):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.simpleliving.net\/images\/hardware\/s7022.gif\"><strong><font color=\"#336699\">\u201cCOEXIST\u201d<\/font><\/strong><\/a><strong> (spelled out with various religious symbols)<\/strong> &#8211; If some of the followers of the religion represented by the crescent moon \u201cc\u201d on your cute little bumper sticker would stop <a href=\"http:\/\/cache.eb.com\/eb\/image?id=74225&#038;rendTypeId=4\"><font color=\"#336699\">hijacking planes<\/font><\/a> and blowing up buildings, coexisting would be a little easier.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Honorable&#8221; mention in this category: &#8220;My Karma Ran Over Your Dogma&#8221;.\u00a0 That&#8217;s right, oil-belching Subaru-driving earth-granny, the fact that you don&#8217;t attend a &#8220;church&#8221; with other &#8220;believers&#8221; <em>does <\/em>make you &#8220;better than me&#8221;.\u00a0 Or whatever.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cA PBS Mind In a FOX News World\u201d<\/strong> &#8211; This particular bumper sticker is positively oozing with smugness. \u201cGod, I can&#8217;t stand being surrounded by these Wal-Mart-shopping, NASCAR-watching, deer-hunting troglodytes. How can these country-fried rubes allow themselves to be spoon-fed White House talking points from Bill O\u2019Reilly? They must not be smart enough to enjoy watching some dusty old Brits mumble through a clunky drama on PBS like I am.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00a0As if Bill Moyers isn&#8217;t the left&#8217;s high-gloss Bill O&#8217;Reilly (or, for that matter, that Bill O is a &#8220;conservative&#8221; in the first place).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cLive Simply So That Others May Simply Live\u201d<\/strong> &#8211; The airheads with this little chestnut on their bumpers are confusing simple wordplay with incredible profundity. This bumper sticker sounds really deep until you realize that a.) it doesn&#8217;t mean a damn thing and b.) the dork in your office who asks if you\u2019re workin&#8217; hard or hardly workin&#8217; is making an equally clever play on words.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And when all of us tax-paying, charity-donating first worlders move to yurts and revert to tending cattle and hunting and gathering, who is going to help those\u00a0who can&#8217;t &#8220;simply live&#8221;, simply, live?\u00a0 Without western (read: First-World) charity, whither Gambia?\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>(&#8230;)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cPro-Child, Pro-Choice\u201d<\/strong> &#8211; I\u2019m for the kids, but I\u2019m also for aborting them willy-nilly too. This bumper sticker has the intellectual consistency of \u201cPro-Ants, Pro-Raid.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>A close runner-up in the worst abortion-related bumper sticker goes to \u201cAgainst Abortion? Don\u2019t Have One.\u201d (Against Robbery? Don\u2019t Rob People!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>(&#8230;)<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u201cDefy Corporate Domination\u201d<\/strong> &#8211; I spotted this gem on the rusty bumper of a Honda Civic on November 8th. Chances are you have never heard of Honda, but its a small automobile-making co-op based out of Mazomanie.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>(&#8230;)<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cPeace Through Music.\u201d<\/strong> &#8211; Trouble in the Sudan, you say? Send in State Street\u2019s bongo-playing hippies. They\u2019ll calm things down. Al-Qaeda insurgents wreaking havoc in Iraq? I\u2019m sure Mr. Johnson\u2019s fourth-hour band class can get in there and straighten things out.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A few nominations of my own:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;You Can Not Simultaneously Prepare for Peace and for War&#8221;<\/strong> &#8211; This quote, attributed to Einstein, ignores the fact that Einstein had to flee for his life <em>from <\/em>a continent that largely &#8220;prepared for peace&#8221; after World War I, in the face of a belief that repudiated &#8220;peace&#8221;, and ran to a nation that <em>did <\/em>prepare (belatedly) for war.\u00a0 Better sticker idea; &#8220;Preparing for peace without preparing to defend it is worse than meaningless&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;ve taken our shots at liberal bumper stickers in recent years.
