{"id":16965,"date":"2011-01-05T12:00:24","date_gmt":"2011-01-05T18:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=16965"},"modified":"2011-01-02T12:38:27","modified_gmt":"2011-01-02T18:38:27","slug":"it-was-twenty-years-ago-today-part-cxxii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=16965","title":{"rendered":"It Was Twenty Years Ago Today, Part CXXII"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was Saturday, January 5, 1991.<\/p>\n<p>I was working at the Mermaid, the supper club, sports bar, bowling alley and nighclub in Moundview where I&#8217;d been spinning records, three nights a week, for a little over two years now.<\/p>\n<p>One of our regular features was the Saturday night live appearances from &#8220;Mister Ed&#8221;, a disk jockey at KDWB.\u00a0 He&#8217;d come out to the bar, talk on the mobile mike, hand out prizes, and generally work the room (for a nice little fee).<\/p>\n<p>We had a pretty good working relationship; I ran a great floor when I was working, and I set up his appearances pretty well.\u00a0 We got along &#8211; which was better than most of the club jocks managed.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;d been over three years since I&#8217;d been out of radio.<\/p>\n<p>And then, it occurred to me; for the first time in three, almost four years, there was a radio guy with some clout who actually had a good opinion of me.<\/p>\n<p>So&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>As the evening ground to a close, and Ed was sipping on his drink, I made my move.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So &#8211; if I was trying to get back into radio, would there be anything I could do at KDWB?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sure&#8221;, Ed said without skipping a beat.\u00a0 &#8220;Absolutely!\u00a0 We could use a weekend screener!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And as fast as I could memorize the details, he said I could start next Saturday, working with Kris Adams and Spyder Harrison.<\/p>\n<p>And that was that.\u00a0 I was back in radio.<\/p>\n<p>A little, anyway.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was Saturday, January 5, 1991.
