{"id":16014,"date":"2010-12-07T12:00:12","date_gmt":"2010-12-07T18:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=16014"},"modified":"2010-12-07T10:14:32","modified_gmt":"2010-12-07T16:14:32","slug":"the-shot-heard-round-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=16014","title":{"rendered":"The Shot Heard Round The World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today is the 69th anniversary of Pearl Harbor.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Sixty-nine years after Japanese planes bombed Pearl Harbor, survivors of the attack are due to gather at the base to remember those killed.<\/p>\n<p>Some 100 survivors, the youngest of whom are in their late 80s, have traveled from around the country to attend Tuesday&#8217;s ceremony.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Minnesota is <a href=\"http:\/\/minnesota.publicradio.org\/display\/web\/2010\/12\/07\/pearl-harbor-anniversary\/?refid=0\">also holding a ceremony<\/a>, at the Veterans building at the foot of the Capitol Mall.\u00a0\u00a0 It&#8217;s a little-known fact even in Minnesota that the very first shots fired at Pearl Harbor &#8211; hours before the air raid &#8211; were fired by a Navy Reserve gun crew from Saint Paul, serving aboard the rehabbed World War I-era destroyer <em>USS Ward<\/em>, on anti-sub patrol outside the Harbor.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 528px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" src=\"http:\/\/home.earthlink.net\/~larrydev\/WardGunh97446.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"518\" height=\"427\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Saint Paul gun crew that fired the first shots at a Japanese midget sub.
