In a perfect world, you\u2019d pay as soon as the food came so you could leave when you\u2019re done.<\/p>\n<p>4) Reporters who say \u201cwe\u2019re following the story\u201d when they really mean they\u2019re hitting the Refresh button on <em>The Drudge Report<\/em> the same as you.<\/p>\n<p>5) Bloggers who say \u201cI reported\u201d such and such when they just cut and pasted from an article online.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Or anyone &#8211; from bloggers up through Geraldo Rivera &#8211; who <em>ever <\/em>uses the phrase &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=671\">this reporter<\/a>&#8221; in any unironic sense.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>6) Books with prologues.<\/p>\n<p>7) Refrigerator doors that keep closing on you when you\u2019re getting something out. Stop helping me. I\u2019ll close the door myself.<\/p>\n<p>8) Drivers who treat a crowded, rush hour freeway like the Grand Prix, just to go from two cars behind you to two cars ahead of you.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/archives\/006677.html\">Hoooyeah<\/a>. Abso<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/archives\/004955.html\">frigginlute<\/a>ly.<\/p>\n<p>A few additions of my own:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Pronouncing the word &#8220;processes&#8221; &#8220;Pro-ses-SEES&#8221;, with big emphasis on the last syllable.\u00a0 Ick.<\/li>\n<li>Anyone wearing those Celtic Thorn tattoos around their arm, that doesn&#8217;t have Celtic Warrior&#8217;s Union card in their wallet.<\/li>\n<li>Guys in pageboy haircuts.\u00a0 Thanksfully, this fad&#8217;s bus seems to have left the station.\u00a0 For now.<\/li>\n<li>Guys with pony tails and earrings.\u00a0 Either one is acceptable.\u00a0 Both are not.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?s=linguistic+AND+hit\">oh so many more<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE:\u00a0 Justin emails:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>> Also, here&#8217;s a linguistic pet-peeve of similar\u00a0ilk: &#8220;matrix&#8221; instead of<br \/>\n> &#8220;chart&#8221; or &#8220;table.&#8221; Not every Excel spreadsheet is\u00a0a &#8220;matrix.&#8221; I did<br \/>\n> four sems of calculus; I&#8217;ll show you a real matrix!\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jeez, yeah.\u00a0 I hate that one too.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, yeah &#8211; and let me add to that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Companies that incorporate &#8220;being 10 minutes late to meetings&#8221; into their corporate culture<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>and<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Replacing &#8220;meetings&#8221; with &#8220;phone conferences&#8221;.\u00a0 In my experience, no &#8220;meeting&#8221; that was comprised of people sitting around in headsets ever ended with anything getting done.\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That is all.<\/p>\n<p>(Or&#8230;is it?)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jeff Kouba at TvM has a few pet peeves: 1) \u201cDoor Close\u201d buttons on elevators that don\u2019t work 2) Poorly done bridges in pop songs 3) Having to wait to pay for the food in restaurants.
