{"id":15076,"date":"2010-11-08T07:00:42","date_gmt":"2010-11-08T12:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=15076"},"modified":"2014-10-05T14:38:38","modified_gmt":"2014-10-05T19:38:38","slug":"recent-race-tame-compared-to-1990-gubernatorial-contest-minnesota-public-radio-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=15076","title":{"rendered":"Living On Planet Media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was driving around on Friday and caught <a href=\"http:\/\/minnesota.publicradio.org\/display\/web\/2010\/11\/04\/carlson-grunset-revisited\/\">this story<\/a>, by MPR&#8217;s Curtis Gilbert, on the 1990 Minnesota gubernatorial election. \u00a0The contest was an epic donnybrook, with a sex scandal taking out the GOP endorsed candidate, leaving Arne Carlson to sweep in and defeat the DFL endorsed candidate Rudy Perpich, who had his own issues.<\/p>\n<p>At any rate, Gilbert tagged the story&#8230;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But Smith said the most dire predictions made in the aftermath of the 1990 governor&#8217;s race never materialized. Many observers said the election signaled a new era of dirty politics.<\/p>\n<p>But as this year&#8217;s governor&#8217;s race demonstrated, Minnesota is still capable of holding a campaign focused on the issues.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Issues?<\/p>\n<p>Mark Dayton&#8217;s entire stock of campaign &#8220;issues&#8221; involved<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>bagging on &#8220;the rich&#8221; (comfortable in the knowledge that nobody in the media would press him publicly on what &#8220;the rich&#8221; were)<\/li>\n<li>a budget plan that never got within a billion dollars of &#8220;balanced&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>a few weeks of intense concern about &#8220;trackers&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That was pretty much it.<\/p>\n<p>Except for six months of toxic sleaze from Alliance for a Better Minnesota, focusing mainly on a couple of 20 year old drinking-while-driving charges and relentless lying about his (actual) budget plan, and an astroturf campaign against businesses that dared to defy the DFL.<\/p>\n<p>In its own way, this campaign has been as sleazy as 1990.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was driving around on Friday and caught this story, by MPR&#8217;s Curtis Gilbert, on the 1990 Minnesota gubernatorial election. \u00a0The contest was an epic donnybrook, with a sex scandal taking out the GOP endorsed candidate, leaving Arne Carlson to sweep in and defeat the DFL endorsed candidate Rudy Perpich, who had his own issues.
