{"id":1455,"date":"2007-10-16T12:40:36","date_gmt":"2007-10-16T17:40:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=1455"},"modified":"2007-10-16T13:13:05","modified_gmt":"2007-10-16T18:13:05","slug":"the-tackily-trendily-clothed-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=1455","title":{"rendered":"The Tackily, Trendily-Clothed City"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On October 23 &#8211; next Tuesday &#8211; the Saint Paul School Board is going to hear <em>yet another <\/em>attempt by a group of well-connected &#8220;youth&#8221; &#8220;anti-war&#8221; &#8220;activists&#8221; to get the Board to bar military recruiters from Saint Paul campuses.<\/p>\n<p>A little bird sent me their internal email:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>NOTE: The &#8220;adult&#8221; peace and justice movements MUST stand in solidarity with our youth who are challenging the militarization of their schools!!!<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That, of course, is hilarious stuff.<\/p>\n<p>At the last meeting I attended,\u00a0the &#8220;anti-war&#8221; group included perhaps three high school kids, and well over a dozen adults and\/or college kids.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Standing in Solidarity?&#8221;\u00a0 They&#8217;re standing in substitution!<\/p>\n<p>But I digress:<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u00a0So far, the StPaul School Board has IGNORED YOUTH VOICES on the issue of military recruiters being given free rein.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Actually, they&#8217;ve given the YOUTH VOICES attempt after attempt to sway the Board &#8211; largely because at least two members of the board, Ann Carrol and Tom Goldstein,\u00a0seem to more or less\u00a0favor the idea of barring recruiters from the campuses, career fairs and so on.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Which, if the author of this email is any indication, might actually benefit the military:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u00a0Too many of our kids are being CHANNELED into the military&#8211;especially youth of color &#038; low-income youth in inner cities &#038; rural areas are being TARGETED by recruiters. <\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Largely because they, traditionally, join the <em>volunteer <\/em>military in vastly greater numbers than the white, upper-middle-class children of liberal parents &#8211; the ones that make up groups\u00a0like these.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>They are offered NO OTHER CHOICES&#8211;NO trade schools or apprenticeships, NO help going to college&#8211;just &#8220;join the army&#8221;. <\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Really?<\/p>\n<p>So when you go to a &#8220;career day&#8221; or a &#8220;college fair&#8221; at a high school, it&#8217;s a chimera &#8211; nothing but booth after booth of military recruiters stretching from wall to wall?<\/p>\n<p>High school kids?\u00a0 Anyone know about this?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Lydia Howell, host\/producer of CATALYST:politics &#038; culture on KFAI Radio<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Hm.\u00a0 Big charges.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Worth looking into.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On October 23 &#8211; next Tuesday &#8211; the Saint Paul School Board is going to hear yet another attempt by a group of well-connected &#8220;youth&#8221; &#8220;anti-war&#8221; &#8220;activists&#8221; to get the Board to bar military recruiters from Saint Paul campuses.
