{"id":14546,"date":"2010-10-21T12:00:55","date_gmt":"2010-10-21T17:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=14546"},"modified":"2014-10-02T10:19:38","modified_gmt":"2014-10-02T15:19:38","slug":"chanting-points-memo-anti-gay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=14546","title":{"rendered":"Chanting Points Memo: &#8220;Anti-Gay&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of Big Left&#8217;s attacks against Tom Emmer in this election is that he&#8217;s &#8220;anti-gay&#8221;. \u00a0It drove the most egregious tempest in this election&#8217;s teapot &#8211; the mass PR mau-mauing of the relentlessly-&#8220;Diversity&#8221;-hugging Target Corporation on behalf of Big Gay for donating money to &#8220;MN Forward&#8221;, a PAC that promotes pelting gays with rocks and garbage.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?cat=108\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: right; border: 0px initial initial;\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4017\/4575208799_e7c6e34c94.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"252\" height=\"192\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>No, no, no. \u00a0I&#8217;m a kidder. \u00a0I kid. \u00a0MN Forward was a purely pro-business PAC, supported by businesses alarmed at Mark Dayton and Tom Horner&#8217;s anti-business policies. \u00a0But you&#8217;d never have known that from the hype surrounding the incident. \u00a0(And comparing stock prices with other major retailers, you&#8217;d never know there <em>was <\/em>an incident. \u00a0I did call it a tempest in a teapot for a reason).<\/p>\n<p>The case for Emmer being &#8220;anti-gay&#8221; is based around two pieces of &#8220;evidence&#8221;:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He supported, along with a wide swath of legislative Republicans, a constitutional amendment defining marriage as a dude and a chick.<\/li>\n<li>He voted against <a href=\"http:\/\/www.votesmart.org\/issue_keyvote_detail.php?cs_id=25905&amp;can_id=38894\">a bill<\/a> that would have banned bullying. \u00a0Really. \u00a0It purported to enjoin all &#8220;forms of harassment based on actual or perceived race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, marital status, disability, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, physical characteristics, and association with anyone with one or more of these characteristics&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As to the former? \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=13792\">Most Minnesotans oppose same-sex marriage<\/a>. \u00a0Most Minnesotans oppose allowing courts to mandate its legalization. \u00a0The way to jump ahead of the courts is to enact valid, sound law which, in theory, the court has no legislative authority to overturn. \u00a0<em>That&#8217;s how separation of powers works<\/em>, even when it&#8217;s inconvenient to your beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>The latter? \u00a0It&#8217;s a stupid law that, as written, would have made bullying against Black or Zoroastrian or Buddhist or female or blind or poor or gay or transgendered or elderly or amputee-Minnesotans <em>really really double-dog bad <\/em>, as opposed to the merely <em>single-dog <\/em>bad act of bullying, say, a white, straight able-bodied straight 19-year-old Methodist boy.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s just plain bad law. \u00a0Of course, it was never intended as law. \u00a0It was introduced so that conservatives could vote against it, thereby to give lefties a cite when they bellow &#8220;TOM EMMER WANTS GAY KIDS TO GET KILLED&#8221; on their cowardly, illiterate, lobotomized little blogs.<\/p>\n<p>But let&#8217;s cut the crap. \u00a0Who do you think is more anti-gay? \u00a0Is it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tom Emmer &#8211; regular guy, who reflects the point of view of the vast majority of Minnesotans, but freely admits that the focus of his governorship is jobs, the economy, jobs, the economy, and more jobs and the economy some more? \u00a0Or is it&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Barack Obama, who, like Paul Wellstone before him, actively courted the gay vote in the most cynical terms, and then supported the Defense of Marriage Act, which is no further to the left of the MN House GOP Caucus in point of fact?
