{"id":1435,"date":"2007-10-11T07:45:08","date_gmt":"2007-10-11T12:45:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=1435"},"modified":"2007-10-11T07:45:08","modified_gmt":"2007-10-11T12:45:08","slug":"the-railroad-runs-on-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=1435","title":{"rendered":"The Railroad Runs On Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last\u00a0spring, Ed and I <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=810\">covered<\/a> the ongoing story of Troy Scheffler, a student at Hamline University who was apparently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=808\">suspended<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=819\">told to seek mental health treatment<\/a> after speaking in favor of individual, armed self-defense in the wake of the Virginia Tech mass-murder.<\/p>\n<p>King from SCSU Scholars notes that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scsuscholars.com\/2007\/10\/gun-nut.html\">while some people get it<\/a>&#8230;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The interim suspension, enforced on April 23, continues in place to this day, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/thefire.org\/index.php\/article\/8475.html\">a press release<\/a> from the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cHamline\u2019s punishment of Troy Scheffler is severe, unfair, and apparently unwarranted,\u201d FIRE President Greg Lukianoff said. \u201cPeacefully advocating for students\u2019 ability to carry a concealed weapon as a response to the Virginia Tech shootings may be controversial, but it simply does not justify ordering a mandatory psychological evaluation.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230;others &#8211; like Hamline University &#8211; clearly do not:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There has been no movement, apparently, since <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=808\"><em><font color=\"#0000ff\">Mitch<\/font><\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.captainsquartersblog.com\/mt\/archives\/009958.php\">Ed<\/a> interviewed him. I had a chance to talk with Troy before he went on their show and I did not find anything in him that appeared in any way &#8220;nutty&#8221;.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Beyond that, Scheffler is a concealed carry permit holder in the\u00a0state of Minnesota; he&#8217;s over 21, has passed a background check and a training course,\u00a0is\u00a0free of any record of drug or alcohol abuse or\u00a0violent mental illness, and has never had a cop note that he has a penchant for violence.\u00a0 He is, demonstrably and statistically, a supremely good risk.<\/p>\n<p>No, Hamline University; it isn&#8217;t about his mental health.\u00a0 It&#8217;s about his beliefs:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0But apparently the willingness of a person to argue for concealed carry permits as a way of defending yourself on a campus from a Virginia Tech-style homicidal rage is so far outside Hamline&#8217;s experience as to lead to such speculation.
