{"id":1389,"date":"2007-10-03T12:13:17","date_gmt":"2007-10-03T17:13:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=1389"},"modified":"2007-10-03T12:20:25","modified_gmt":"2007-10-03T17:20:25","slug":"spike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=1389","title":{"rendered":"Spike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m prone to carrying out little experiments on my kids.<\/p>\n<p>For their own good, of course.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, when my kids were in first and third grades, my son&#8217;s reading scores were lagging a bit.\u00a0 So late that May, about the time school let out, the TV broke.<\/p>\n<p>No, really.\u00a0 It did.\u00a0 And I pled poverty, and let it sit unused all summer long, until late September.\u00a0 The kids had nothing to do all summer but play and read.\u00a0 And the kids&#8217; reading scores improved; Bun went back to school reading at a ninth grade level, and Zam was way ahead of his level, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So the following summer, the TV broke again.\u00a0 OK, this time it &#8220;broke&#8221; &#8211; a cable broke, and rather than replace it I pled poverty again, and let it sit for four more months.\u00a0 The reading scores improved quite a bit again.<\/p>\n<p>Late last spring, my laptop and the family&#8217;s desktop broke down almost simultaneously.\u00a0 Part of the problem was gross overuse; the kids were just online too damn much.\u00a0 So I let &#8217;em stay broke again.\u00a0 And it was a generally good experiment.<\/p>\n<p>But it kinda played hell on my blogging.\u00a0 For the last three or four months, I&#8217;ve been blogging at coffee shops, libraries, and on the occasional break at work.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Well, no more.\u00a0 I got a computer put together last night.\u00a0 And was able to actually blog at home for the first time in quite a long time, quite a long time, quite a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>My output today probably was your first clue, though&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m prone to carrying out little experiments on my kids.
