{"id":13861,"date":"2010-09-27T12:02:34","date_gmt":"2010-09-27T17:02:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=13861"},"modified":"2010-09-27T10:15:20","modified_gmt":"2010-09-27T15:15:20","slug":"chanting-points-memo-much-ado-about-bupkes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=13861","title":{"rendered":"Chanting Points Memo:  Much Ado About Bupkes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Remember last week? \u00a0When former Emmer campaign chair Mark Buesgens was arrested for suspected DUI?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4017\/4575208799_e7c6e34c94.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"252\" height=\"192\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The biggest offense that had the local leftybloggers howling, naturally, wasn&#8217;t the alleged DUI; it was that although Buesgens had left (or &#8220;Emmer claimed he&#8217;d left&#8221;, according to the local leftyblogs) the Emmer campaign, it <em>could not have been<\/em>, said they, based on a copy of a fax to the Campaign Finance Board dated the day of Buesgens&#8217; arrest.<\/p>\n<p>We <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=13756\">discussed this last week<\/a>; to the Leftybloggers, perhaps weaned Jesse Ventura&#8217;s version of logic, \u00a0absence of any evidence of their claim whatsoever means there&#8217;s a coverup. \u00a0I debunked that, of course; the campaign <em>and <\/em>the party confirmed Buesgens had left the campaign and joined the party a solid week early.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Well&#8221;, some leftyblogger sputtered, &#8220;do we want someone that bad at paperwork running the government?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>My jaw dropped. \u00a0Governors have <em>people<\/em> &#8211; well-paid union people in many cases, who are supremely competent at their jobs &#8211; to do paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>But is the fact that the Emmer Campaign faxed the change in the name of its chairman to the Campaign Finance Board, to amend the CFB website, a week after the actual change even an offense on even the most niggling administrative level?<\/p>\n<p>I called the Campaign Finance Board. \u00a0A very friendly representative (whose permission to speak on the record I was not able to get, so I&#8221;ll leave him unnamed for now) left me a voicemail message saying that the general rule is <em>ten days<\/em>, although &#8220;we occasionally allow some flexibility on that&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Ten days.<\/p>\n<p>The CFB staffer even left me a Minnesota statute that includes that statutory deadline &#8211; 1<a href=\"https:\/\/www.revisor.mn.gov\/statutes\/?id=10A.025\">0A.025 Subdivision 4<\/a> (emphasis added):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Subd. 4.Changes and corrections<\/strong>. Material changes in information previously submitted and corrections to a report or statement must be reported in writing to the board within <strong>ten days following the date of the event prompting the change or the date upon which the person filing became aware of the inaccuracy.<\/strong> The change or correction must identify the form and the paragraph containing the information to be changed or corrected<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So let&#8217;s sum up here; Emmer&#8217;s campaign faxed the update to the CFB three days inside the deadline. The motivations &#8211; Buesgens&#8217; arrest &#8211; are irrelevant. \u00a0<em>The Emmer campaign followed the law in every respect<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The DFL\/leftyblogs&#8217; whispering campaign is &#8211; let&#8217;s call a spade a spade &#8211;<strong> a calculated lie intended to mislead voters not familiar with the law.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Remember last week? \u00a0When former Emmer campaign chair Mark Buesgens was arrested for suspected DUI?
