{"id":13547,"date":"2010-09-16T12:00:32","date_gmt":"2010-09-16T17:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=13547"},"modified":"2011-10-20T10:31:05","modified_gmt":"2011-10-20T15:31:05","slug":"betty-mccollum-punches-her-ticket","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=13547","title":{"rendered":"Betty McCollum Punches Her Ticket"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you blinked last Monday, you missed Betty McCollum&#8217;s &#8220;town hall&#8221; meeting. \u00a0Indeed, if you sneezed at the wrong time, you may have missed the part where she or any of her staff called it a &#8220;town hall&#8221;, themselves.<\/p>\n<p>I had a prior engagement &#8211; but Doug Bass attended.<\/p>\n<p>Not that it was easy:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px;\">I actually didn&#8217;t know it was advertised as a &#8220;DFL Town Hall Rally&#8221; until I got to the event. \u00a0But doesn&#8217;t the phrase &#8220;DFL Town Hall Rally&#8221; sound contradictory, oxymoronic? \u00a0If they said &#8220;DFL Rally,&#8221; it would be clearly understood as a partisan event. \u00a0If they said &#8220;Town Hall Meeting,&#8221; I believe it would be generally understood as a non-partisan event. \u00a0So the very phrase &#8220;DFL Town Hall Rally&#8221; sounded odd to me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px;\">As I headed to Macalester, I was thinking to myself &#8220;Whose idea was it to have a town hall meeting at 5:30 pm? \u00a0There are a lot of people who aren&#8217;t going to be able to make it.&#8221; \u00a0I then realized that this wasn&#8217;t a bug, it was a feature, a mechanism of keeping inconvenient people away from the event.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Doug noticed something I did not; I&#8217;ll add emphasis:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px;\">When I got to Macalester College, one of Teresa Collett&#8217;s volunteers saw me, and we started chatting. \u00a0He showed me the press release for the event, <strong>which was issued on Friday, the traditional day where news goes to be buried.<\/strong> And not just any Friday, mind you, the Friday three days before the event, and the Friday the day before September 11, where the nation&#8217;s attention is elsewhere. \u00a0The only media outlet that covered the event was\u00a0<a style=\"color: #990000; text-decoration: underline; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\" href=\"http:\/\/minnesota.publicradio.org\/collections\/special\/columns\/polinaut\/archive\/2010\/09\/mccollum_announ.shtml?refid=0\">Minnesota Public Radio<\/a>, which let the abovementioned &#8220;Town Hall Rally&#8221; oddity pass without comment.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px;\">And this may be the quote of the day:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px;\">I thought to myself &#8220;This isn&#8217;t a Town Hall Meeting, this is a flash mob! \u00a0A secret, moonless midnight flash mob!&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px;\">And the conclusion?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px;\">This event was a Potemkin Town Hall meeting, an event created for the purpose of being able to claim that a Town Hall meeting took place. \u00a0The scheduling, the publicity, the audience made it nothing of the sort. \u00a0It was a treachery within further treacheries.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Read the whole thing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px;\">So we had the &#8220;flash mob&#8221;, and we&#8217;ll have two more coming up with friendly audiences &#8211; a union hall and another.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px;\">That&#8217;s a lot of &#8220;appearances&#8221; for Betty McCollum.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Maybe being in a &#8220;D+13&#8221; district doesn&#8217;t feel as secure as it used to&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; padding: 0px;\">(And yes, now would be a <em>perfect <\/em>time to pitch in a few bucks for to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.collettforcongress.com\/\">Teresa Collett&#8217;s<\/a> campaign. \u00a0The CD2 leadership hates me when I write this, but you live in the Second, where John Kline is going to win by thirty on a <em>bad <\/em>day, it&#8217;d be cool if you could peel off a buck or two for Teresa, who actually seems to have a shot. \u00a0And\/or for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.votedemos.com\/\">Joel Demos<\/a>, who&#8217;s running the funnest underdog campaign I&#8217;ve seen since Harley McClain. \u00a0And for that matter for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.demmerforcongress.com\/Home.aspx\">Randy Demmer<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/chipcravaack.com\/\">Chip Cravaack<\/a>, both of whom have quietly moved into positions to have decent shots against Walz and Oberstar).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you blinked last Monday, you missed Betty McCollum&#8217;s &#8220;town hall&#8221; meeting. \u00a0Indeed, if you sneezed at the wrong time, you may have missed the part where she or any of her staff called it a &#8220;town hall&#8221;, themselves.
