{"id":13404,"date":"2010-09-10T07:29:25","date_gmt":"2010-09-10T12:29:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=13404"},"modified":"2010-09-10T11:30:13","modified_gmt":"2010-09-10T16:30:13","slug":"the-unfiskable-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=13404","title":{"rendered":"The Unfiskable"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Joe Bodell at the <em>Minnesota &#8220;Progressive&#8221; Project <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=1257\">may know<\/a> his technology. \u00a0But he\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mnprogressiveproject.com\/diary\/7130\/us-must-deal-with-domestic-radicalism\">needs to work a little on his cultural and language literacy<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It&#8217;s always been a curiosity to me that our media calls radical Muslim leaders &#8220;clerics&#8221; while people like Terry in Florida and Phelps in Kansas get to hang on to the title &#8220;Pastor.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>{{facepalm}}<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s partly because Christian churches have \u00a0a fairly uniform system for naming and identifying clergy; Islam&#8217;s system isn&#8217;t nearly as uniform. &#8220;Pastor&#8221; is a very broadly-accepted definitive for protestant clergy; &#8220;Father&#8221; works for Catholics, while &#8220;Rabbi&#8221; generally works for Jews.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Imam&#8221; is usually, but not always, an appropriate definitive for a Muslim prayer leader.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Sounds less ominous than &#8220;cleric&#8221;, doesn&#8217;t it?Are we trying to make the other side&#8217;s radicals sound like Dungeons &amp; Dragons characters?
