Lisa Murkowski keeps returning from the dead.\u00a0 Despite losing on election night, losing the absentee ballot fracus, and even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=13076\">conceding the GOP primary<\/a>, Murkowski&#8217;s political ego has shown staying power\u00a0the envy of Jason Voorhees.\u00a0 Even the failure of Murkowski&#8217;s latest attempt to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ktuu.com\/news\/ktuu-murkowski-libertarian-meeting-090710,0,7360933.story\">woo Alaska&#8217;s Libertarian Party<\/a> apparently hasn&#8217;t dampered her efforts to return to D.C. short of buying her own ticket.\u00a0 Instead, Murkowski&#8217;s newest bid is to prove the pen is mighter than the ballot with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/2010\/09\/08\/murkowski-likely-run-alaska-senate-race\/\">longshot write-in candidacy<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"FONT-SIZE: 14px\">Alaska Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/topics\/politics\/lisa-murkowski.htm\">Lisa Murkowski<\/a> is expected to mount an independent campaign for senator after losing her <a id=\"KonaLink0\" href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/wp-admin\/#\" target=\"undefined\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14px; color: #0000ff; position: static;\"><span style=\"FONT-WEIGHT: 400; FONT-SIZE: 14px; COLOR: blue! important; FONT-FAMILY: arial, sans-serif; POSITION: relative\">primary<\/span><\/span><\/a>, much to the dismay of her Republican colleagues, who won&#8217;t back her, according to a senior GOP leadership aide.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"FONT-SIZE: 14px\">&#8220;The entire Republican leadership has endorsed and would continue to support <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/topics\/politics\/senate-candidate-joe-miller.htm\">Joe Miller<\/a>,&#8221; a the aide told Fox News on Wednesday&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"FONT-SIZE: 14px\">A National Republican Senatorial Committee official made it clear that more money would be on the way to Miller, and suggested that Murkowski might be going through &#8220;the seven stages of grief.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"FONT-SIZE: 14px\">&#8220;You know, first they concede &#8230; then there are the rumors of a write-in candidacy &#8230; then you get the acknowledgment that they&#8217;re done,&#8221; the official said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If Murkowski does go through with a write-in effort, than she truly is &#8220;done&#8221;; which\u00a0may suggest that she&#8217;s not Freddy Krueger, she&#8217;s Bruce Willis in the <em>&#8220;Sixth Sense.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Murkowski doesn&#8217;t appear to be gaining any options as the window for her to make a decision narrows.\u00a0 The Libertarian option isn&#8217;t offically closed as long as endorsee Brian Haase continues to entain the notion of removing himself from the ballot.\u00a0 But the LP&#8217;s executive committee has already voted against nominating Murkowski short of Haase presenting them with a <em>fait accompli<\/em> with his withdrawal.\u00a0 And given some of the statements by the LP&#8217;s committee, even that scenario might not produce a Libertarian-endorsed Lisa Murkowski.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Write-in_candidate\">Only<\/a> Strom Thurmond has ever won a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Senate_election_in_South_Carolina,_1954\">general election write-in candidacy <\/a>for the U.S. Senate.\u00a0 Thurmond&#8217;s 1954 candidacy was far stranger than Alaska&#8217;s current senate tift.\u00a0 The death of the Democratic incumbent, the Democrat Party&#8217;s decision to not hold a primary election, and former Governor Thurmond&#8217;s backing by the major players in the party were the only reasons why the endless South Carolina Senator prevailed.\u00a0 Considering only one candidate was on the ballot &#8211; St. Sen. Edgar A. Brown for you political junkies out there &#8211; Thurmond&#8217;s candidacy was unique in the extreme.\u00a0 Nothing approaching it awaits Murkowski on the frozen electoral tundra.<\/p>\n<p>No pollster has yet demonstrated the effect of a Murkowski write-in campaign in Joe Miller and Scott McAdams minor league showdown.\u00a0 While others polls show <a href=\"http:\/\/rightosphere.com\/blog.php?user=Aron&amp;blogentry_id=5872\">Murkowski with a narrow lead <\/a>over Joe Miller (and Scott McAdams trailing badly), all were done with the assumption that Murkowski would actually be on the ballot.\u00a0 A Murkowski coalition of moderate Republicans, independents and assorted anti-Palin voters could have propelled her to victory in a three-way race.<\/p>\n<p>But a strategy that relies on such deep candidate committment to write-in her name &#8211; regardless of the hundreds of thousands of dollars Murkowski still has available to encourage voters to do so &#8211; is bound to attract only the hardest of hardcore Murkowski supporters.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also one of the few strategies that could provide a victory to Democrat Scott McAdams.\u00a0 While Murkowski&#8217;s holdouts certainly won&#8217;t be the 50% of the\u00a0Republican electorate that voted for her on primary day, any votes for her will almost certainly be coming out of Miller&#8217;s side.\u00a0 Couple that with even one poll showing Murkowski pulling low double-digit write-in support and the DNC might change it&#8217;s mind about bypassing the 49th State.<\/p>\n<p>Murkowski could still be a viable force in Alaska politics &#8211; possibly even challenging first-term Senator Mark Begich in another four years.\u00a0 But the longer Murkowski openly flirts with continuing a candidacy out of a cocktail of ego and spite, the less likely she&#8217;ll successfully seek office again.\u00a0 Much like Charlie Crist, Murkowski&#8217;s unwillingness to suffer\u00a0a present\u00a0political setback has endangered (or in Crist&#8217;s case, likely ruined) her political past and future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vanity starts with an &#8216;M&#8217; in Alaska&#8217;s senate contest.
