Gary Miller at TvM is a little down in the dumps<\/a> over the Ramstad retirement:<\/p>\n

Jim Ramstad is the embodiment of everything\u00a0I loathe about RINOs.\u00a0 He is an SOB but he\u2019s OUR SOB and losing Ramstad would almost certainly mean losing this \u201cfirst ring\u201d seat.\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I’m not\u00a0quite <\/em>as down on\u00a0Ramstad as Gary; day in and day out, he did <\/em>usually vote with the good guys; the American Conservative Union rated him a feeble but\u00a0not-catastrophic 68%<\/a>\u00a0(equal to Norm\u00a0Coleman, better than John McCain),\u00a0while at least one lefty source isn’t exactly scattering palm fronds<\/a> in his path.\u00a0 Of course, he screwed the conservative pooch on many vital issues; he first earned my ire by voting for Clinton’s 1994 “Crime Bill”, a greater impingement on civil liberty than anything the Bush Adminstration has even suggested in the left’s most paranoid delusions.\u00a0 In balance, he’s generally on the right side (compared to Minnesota’s DFLers), but frustratingly unreliable.<\/p>\n

Of course, we’d like to shoot for better than “sucks less”:<\/p>\n

Congressional majorities are comprised of true believers and heretics.\u00a0 Congressman Ramstad is a card-carrying member of the latter but his departure would make it that much more difficult to regain the Speaker\u2019s gavel in the next few election cycles.\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The obvious answer, of course, is to win the Third District for a conservative.<\/p>\n

Gary’s stablemate First Ringer is on the case<\/a>\u00a0with the best wrapup of potential candidates I’ve seen yet.<\/p>\n

Look for more – much more – on TrueNorth<\/a>, where this race is going to be one of the big priorities for the next year.<\/p>\n
