{"id":13076,"date":"2010-09-01T23:02:07","date_gmt":"2010-09-02T04:02:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=13076"},"modified":"2010-09-01T23:02:07","modified_gmt":"2010-09-02T04:02:07","slug":"millers-crossing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=13076","title":{"rendered":"Miller&#8217;s Crossing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Alaska&#8217;s GOP Senate nominee starts his quest to ask voters to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0100150\/\">&#8220;look into your heart&#8221;.<\/a>\u00a0 Senate Democrats may start asking contributors to look into their wallets.<\/p>\n<p>It had all the looks of an epic recount slugfest.\u00a0 Narrow margin of victory.\u00a0 A near blood fued between the waring factions.\u00a0 Lawyers from Washington.\u00a0 Instead, Alaska&#8217;s GOP primary battle royale <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/245333\/murkowski-concedes-robert-costa\">ended with a whimper, not a bang<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska conceded late Tuesday in her Republican primary race to Joe Miller, a <span id=\"IL_AD3\">lawyer<\/span> from Fairbanks backed by Tea Party activists, <span id=\"IL_AD2\">Sarah Palin<\/span> and other conservatives&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Murkowski\u2019s concession followed the counting of about 16,000 additional ballots on Tuesday, which left Mr. Miller with a lead of about 1,469 votes out of about 103,000 cast. Several thousand more votes were to be counted on Friday but the trend suggested Ms. Murkowski would not gain enough ground to win.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Despite fumbling her re-election bid worse than <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Miracle_at_the_Meadowlands\">Joe Pisarcik <\/a>and entertaining a variety of ways to get onto the November ballot, Lisa Murkowski decided &#8211; at least for the moment &#8211; not to further risk the odds of a Republican holding her seat come November.\u00a0 That hasn&#8217;t stopped Murkowski from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/stories\/0910\/41683.html\">sidestepping an endorsement<\/a>\u00a0of her\u00a0primary <em>b\u00eate noire<\/em>.\u00a0 And from the looks of yet another early poll, Joe Miller could use the support as Rasmussen has Democrat Scott McAdams <a href=\"http:\/\/rightosphere.com\/blog.php?user=Aron&amp;blogentry_id=5713\">within 6%<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rasmussenreports.com\/public_content\/politics\/elections\/election_2010\/election_2010_senate_elections\/alaska\/election_2010_alaska_senate\">Rasmussen Alaska Senatorial Survey<\/a> <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Joe Miller (R) 50%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Scott McAdams (D) 44%<\/li>\n<li>Other 4%<\/li>\n<li>Not sure 2%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Favorable \/ Unfavorable {Net}<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Scott McAdams 43% \/ 36% {+7%}<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Joe Miller 50% \/ 44% {+6%}<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>To call McAdams&#8217; post primary fundraising Lazarus-like would imply his financial efforts had once been alive.\u00a0 But since Murkowski and Miller headed to extra innings, Democrats in the lower 48 states have been slowly funneling McAdams coffers &#8211; thus far to the tune of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.actblue.com\/entity\/fundraisers\/24825\">just over $77,000<\/a>.\u00a0 Such figures might help in the <a href=\"http:\/\/radio-media.com\/markets\/main.html\">173rd &#8220;largest&#8221; media market <\/a>in the U.S., but McAdams may be fighting his own internecine battle with state and national Democrats who are hinting at trying to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alaskadispatch.com\/dispatches\/politics\/6656-against-the-odds-does-scott-mcadams-have-a-chance-against-joe-miller\">replace\u00a0him <\/a>with more established names like former Governor Tony Knowles or former Lt. Gov. Fran Ulmer.<\/p>\n<p>More likely, Alaska will be witnessing two AAA candidates battling in the political majors, egging on by activists from both sides.\u00a0\u00a0 Neither party&#8217;s senate branch is likely to pour resources into Alaska; the DSCC even moreso if McAdams remains on the ticket as they simply can&#8217;t afford to expend resources with so many vulernable incumbents.\u00a0 But that hasn&#8217;t stopped conservative and liberals activists from trying to throw gas on the cooling embers of the primary in an effort to stoke interest and donations.\u00a0 Consider the race\u00a0the defacto\u00a0Tea Party vs The Daily Kos battle of the frozen tundra.<\/p>\n<p>But Joe Miller&#8217;s biggest opponent isn&#8217;t Scott McAdams but &#8211; depending on which numbers you feel matter more &#8211; either the <a href=\"http:\/\/rightosphere.com\/blog.php?user=Aron&amp;blogentry_id=5658\">40% of Republicans who say they have an unfavorable opinion about him <\/a>or the near 50% of Republicans who voted against him.\u00a0 To that effect, Miller needs to keep Tea Party interest in his campaign brewing lest the coffers run dry, especially as he attempts to bridge the divide between his supporters and Murkowski&#8217;s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Could Murkowski torpedo the entire endeavor and endorse McAdams?\u00a0 Sure, but doing so would stain the entire Murowski legacy in Alaska and all but formally ensure that Lisa Murkowski&#8217;s political career truly ended on primary night.\u00a0 Murkowski&#8217;s relatively quick concession at least shows enough political acumen to suggest she&#8217;s still interested in surviving to fight another day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alaska&#8217;s GOP Senate nominee starts his quest to ask voters to &#8220;look into your heart&#8221;.\u00a0 Senate Democrats may start asking contributors to look into their wallets.
