{"id":12893,"date":"2011-07-19T11:00:07","date_gmt":"2011-07-19T17:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=12893"},"modified":"2011-07-19T09:08:18","modified_gmt":"2011-07-19T15:08:18","slug":"it-was-twenty-years-ago-today-kstp2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=12893","title":{"rendered":"It Was Twenty Years Ago Today, Part CXXVII"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was Friday, July 19, 1991.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=12889\">few weeks back<\/a>, Joe Hanson had tipped me off that KSTP-AM was looking for a new &#8220;Executive Producer&#8221; &#8211; sort of a Program Director, but less power.<\/p>\n<p>That night, I wrote a resume. \u00a0It took some stretching; the sum total of my experience was&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A year and change at KEYJ\/KQDJ back in high school. \u00a0A great learning experience, to be sure &#8211; I reported news, did sports, and wrote and cut commercials as well as spinning records &#8211; but it was a year and change of part-time work.<\/li>\n<li>A summer at KDAK in Carrington, ND as a full-time jock, play by play guy, and the station&#8217;s main commercial production guy.<\/li>\n<li>Another couple of years part-timing at KQDJ in college.<\/li>\n<li>My year and change at KSTP-AM, producing Don Vogel and Geoff Charles and doing my weekend graveyard show.<\/li>\n<li>The year and a half watching the needle bob at K-63 and answering phones and running the occasional board at KDWB.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I guess my talent as a writer didn&#8217;t start with my blog. \u00a0I came indoors from some yard work to a message on the answering machine (!) from Ginny Morris, asking for a call back about perhaps talking about the executive producer gig.<\/p>\n<p>I called back, and got through to her secretary. \u00a0She wondered if I could come in to the station on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>I sure could.<\/p>\n<p>I hung up, and frantically scoured the house for my suit. \u00a0I reassembled it, and whispered a silent prayer than it hadn&#8217;t shrunk.<\/p>\n<p>And then I started trying to figure out how to convince Ginny Morris I was management material.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/p>\n<p>Does it seem to you that this opportunity dropped into my life suddenly, even abruptly?<\/p>\n<p>It seemed that way to me too, at the time. \u00a0I heard about the opening one day in June. \u00a0I sent the resume the next day. \u00a0And while I kept my fingers crossed, that&#8217;s about all the thought I put into it. \u00a0I&#8217;d pretty much given up on anything happening.<\/p>\n<p>Until it did.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was Friday, July 19, 1991.
