{"id":12089,"date":"2010-07-16T16:28:02","date_gmt":"2010-07-16T21:28:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=12089"},"modified":"2010-07-22T22:48:47","modified_gmt":"2010-07-23T03:48:47","slug":"its-rerun-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=12089","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s Rerun Season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0The Dems have officially run out of stuff to talk about.<\/p>\n<p>So they&#8217;ve gone back to reruns of earlier tempests in teapots.<\/p>\n<p>A &#8220;Jim Horan&#8221; fobbed a &#8220;story&#8221; off on &#8220;Talking Points Memo&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0via \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/api.twitter.com\/jh0ran\/status\/18714797446\">Twitter<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>RT @tpmmedia: Flashback: Emmer Had Past DWIs &#8212; And Sponsored Bills To Soften DWI Laws <a href=\"http:\/\/tpm.ly\/a244GP\">http:\/\/tpm.ly\/a244GP<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now, if you&#8217;ve been paying attention, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=10284\">all the <em>smart <\/em>people dealt with this &#8220;issue&#8221;<\/a> quite some time ago.\u00a0 The DWIs were in 1981 and 1991; Emmer sponsored legislation to make it possible for people who&#8217;d been convicted <em>but kept their noses clean <\/em>to get out of under some of the more onerous burdens of sentencing earlier.\u00a0 I wrote the first time this issue emerged, when the issue came out before the GOP convention&#8230;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;regarding a couple of DWI-related charges,\u00a0that&#8230;Tom Emmer, got 19 and 29 years ago \u2013 questioning not only his character due to the arrests, but some legislation he backed that\u2019d have had the effect of <em>treating drunk drivers as innocent until proven guilty <\/em>and <em>making DUIs private information <\/em>after ten years of good behavior \u2013 in other words, allowing people who\u2019d made\u00a0 a dumb mistake to function and get their lives back.\u00a0Drunk driving is an emotional issue \u2013 made all the more so by groups like Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the rest of the drunk driving lobby.\u00a0 It\u2019s understandable; anyone who\u2019s lost a loved one to a drunk driver is justifiably motivated to seek change.\u00a0\u00a0 But the .08 blood alcohol level limit is a ludicrious waste of resources, and the resources spent on hammering on first-time, only-time offenders with low levels of intoxication are largely a complete waste.<\/p>\n<p>Question:\u00a0 Does saying the above mean I \u201csupport\u201d or am \u201csoft on\u201d drunk drivers and drunk driving?<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s ludicrous to treat attempts to make the system fairer and more rational as \u201csympathy for drunk drivers\u201d.\u00a0 Almost as ludicrous as assuming two mistakes made a generation ago are defining traits about a late-fortysomething guys\u2019 judgment.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00a0All the smart people dealt with this issue three months ago.<\/p>\n<p>But DFL propaganda is never aimed at smart people.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, yeah &#8211; who&#8217;s pushing the story?\u00a0 Who is &#8220;Jim Horan?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pub\/jim-horan\/18\/ba2\/286\">working for<\/a> <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Independence Party candidate<\/span> stealth DFLer Tom Horner:<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 469px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4136\/4799656503_5f059f979c.jpg\" alt=\"Screenshot from LinkedIn\" width=\"459\" height=\"314\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Screenshot from LinkedIn<\/p><\/div>\n<p>That sound you hear?\u00a0 It&#8217;s the sound of Tom &#8220;Weasel&#8221; Horner&#8217;s campaign scraping the ground below the bottom of the barrel.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0The Dems have officially run out of stuff to talk about.
