{"id":11812,"date":"2010-07-07T12:00:38","date_gmt":"2010-07-07T17:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=11812"},"modified":"2010-07-07T10:56:36","modified_gmt":"2010-07-07T15:56:36","slug":"tips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=11812","title":{"rendered":"Tips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>:The post could also be entitled &#8220;Every Single DFL-Linked Blog On Emmer&#8217;s Tip Credit Proposal&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Because I must have seen twenty different variations on <strong>TOM EMMER THINKS WAITRESSES MAKE TOO MUCH<\/strong> in the leftyblogs the past couple of days.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d love to talk with one of these people &#8211; any one of whom may or may not have worked as a food\/beverage server, but of whom none I suspect have ever run\u00a0 small business that wasn&#8217;t a &#8220;political consultancy&#8221; of some sort or another &#8211; and ask &#8217;em a few questions.<\/p>\n<p>It might go something like this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>MITCH<\/strong>: So &#8211; how much is something worth?<\/p>\n<p><strong>A FICTIONAL BUT ALL TOO REALISTIC LEFTYBLOGGER<\/strong>:What the Government says it&#8217;s worth!<\/p>\n<p><strong>MITCH<\/strong>:\u00a0 Uh huh.\u00a0 So if you&#8217;re buying, say, a Prius from me&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>AFBATRL<\/strong>:&#8230;yaaaaaaay!<\/p>\n<p><strong>MITCH<\/strong>: &#8230;and I charge you $80,000, will you buy it?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><strong>AFBATRL<\/strong>: Oh, bogus, dude. That&#8217;s more than I want to spend!\u00a0 No Prius is worth that much.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><strong>MITCH<\/strong>:\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 Exactly.\u00a0 So if I try to sell a Prius for more than you are naturally willing to spend for it, nobody will buy it.\u00a0 Right?<\/p>\n<p><strong>AFBATRL<\/strong>:\u00a0 OK, I guess.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MITCH<\/strong>: OK, so what if I have a car lot with ten Priuses, that cost me $15,000 wholesale&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>AFBATRL<\/strong>:\u00a0 &#8230;what&#8217;s that?<\/p>\n<p><strong>MITCH<\/strong>: &#8230;er, from the factory, and I sell them to people for $1 a piece?<\/p>\n<p><strong>AFBATRL<\/strong>:\u00a0 Ooh!\u00a0 Yeah!\u00a0 You can do that?<\/p>\n<p><strong>MITCH<\/strong>:\u00a0 No.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll go broke.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>AFBATRL<\/strong>:\u00a0 So what?\u00a0 You&#8217;ll have ten buyers!\u00a0 With Priuses!\u00a0\u00a0That&#8217;s what busiensses need, right?\u00a0 Buyers? \u00a0You get buyers, Mother Gaia gets Priuses!<\/p>\n<p><strong>MITCH<\/strong>:\u00a0 {{facepalm}}<\/p>\n<p><strong>AFBATRL<\/strong>:\u00a0 Blogger Berg?<\/p>\n<p><strong>MITCH<\/strong>:\u00a0 Yeah, I just&#8230;OK.\u00a0 So say you own a restaurant.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>AFBATRL<\/strong>:\u00a0 A vegan breakfast place!<\/p>\n<p><strong>MITCH<\/strong>: Whatever.\u00a0 And after you play for your supplies and rent and taxes, you have nine dollars an hour to pay for labor &#8211; your waitstaff.\u00a0 You&#8217;ve got a decent location &#8211; lots of traffic, a neighborhood full of single couples without kids&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>AFBATRL<\/strong>:\u00a0 &#8230;yaaaay!<\/p>\n<p><strong>MITCH<\/strong>: &#8230;so you wanna make sure you have plenty of service.\u00a0 So do you pay one waitress nine dollars an hour, or do you pay three of them $3.00 an hour apiece?<\/p>\n<p><strong>AFBATRL<\/strong>:\u00a0 Simple.\u00a0 You pay three of them nine dollars an hour!\u00a0 Because $3,50 is not a living wage!<\/p>\n<p><strong>MITCH<\/strong>:\u00a0 Well, wait!\u00a0 You can&#8217;t afford that!\u00a0 If you do that, you&#8217;ll be losing $18 an hour, every hour!<\/p>\n<p><strong>AFBATRL<\/strong>:\u00a0 Well, there must be some sort of government program&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>MITCH<\/strong>: Well, hold on a minute &#8211;\u00a0a good waitress can get tips!\u00a0\u00a0 I mean, do the math; fifteen tables &#8211; five tables to a waitress &#8211; each getting three $30 tabs per morning rush between 6-9AM, paying 15% tips after allowing for deadbeats, equals $67 per morning per waitress &#8211; which is $18 an hour, counting the $3 you&#8217;re paying them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>AFBATRL<\/strong>:\u00a0 Oh, yeah!\u00a0 I read on &#8220;Tom Emmer&#8217;s Minnesota&#8221; that he said that a waitress can make $100,000 a year!\u00a0 So why aren&#8217;t the waitresses in my vegan breakfast joint making that kind of money?<\/p>\n<p><strong>MITCH<\/strong>:\u00a0 Look, there are no guarantees.\u00a0 Being a waiter, a bartender, a cocktailer, depends on how good you are, and where you work &#8211; and the better you are, the more you can earn.\u00a0 Someone pouring coffee at a truckstop in Valley City North Dakota might make a few bucks a day; someone working at Manny&#8217;s, serving $600 in meals per table to people who are used to tipping 20% for good service, can make hundreds of dollars in an evening.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>AFBATRL<\/strong>:\u00a0 So why don&#8217;t I pay my staff hundreds of dollars a day, and make it easier?<\/p>\n<p><strong>MITCH<\/strong>:\u00a0 Because you would have to add more than 20% to the cost of your food to pay them, which means at least 20% fewer people would come in to your restaurant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AFBATRL<\/strong>:\u00a0 So we&#8217;d need a bailout!<\/p>\n<p><strong>MITCH<\/strong>:\u00a0 Er&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>AFBATRL<\/strong>:\u00a0 Hey, I do have a question.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MITCH<\/strong>:\u00a0 What?<\/p>\n<p><strong>AFBATRL<\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0 What is this concept of &#8220;tipping&#8221; you keep talking about?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Just a hunch.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>:The post could also be entitled &#8220;Every Single DFL-Linked Blog On Emmer&#8217;s Tip Credit Proposal&#8221;.
