{"id":1089,"date":"2007-07-24T12:25:34","date_gmt":"2007-07-24T17:25:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=1089"},"modified":"2007-07-24T12:25:34","modified_gmt":"2007-07-24T17:25:34","slug":"above-question","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=1089","title":{"rendered":"Above Question"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lee Helgen is a DFL City Councilman who represents Saint Paul&#8217;s North End.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Among the whole crowd of DFL sinecures up for election this fall, Helgen&#8217;s seat is probably going to be the most interesting race.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve encountered Helgen before &#8211; his involvement in the controversial teardown of the house at 14 East Jessamine last year (I covered it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/archives\/007103.html\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/archives\/007107.html\">here<\/a>) is still fresh in many minds.\u00a0 Rumors around Saint Paul hint of other stories that haven&#8217;t broken yet.<\/p>\n<p>And <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.twincities.com\/city_hall_scoop\/2007\/07\/ward_5_ready_to_rumble.html\">then there&#8217;s this<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>MGM [Liquor Warehouse] owns two residential homes on the southern part of the block [at the southwest corner of Larpenteur and Lexington], leading to speculation that expansion into the quiet neighborhood north of Como Park is imminent &#8212; something many neighbors oppose.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float: left\"><a onclick=\"window.open('http:\/\/blogs.twincities.com\/city_hall_scoop\/upload\/2007\/07\/ward_5_ready_to_rumble\/leeandbilly1.html', 'popup', 'width=490,height=360,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.twincities.com\/city_hall_scoop\/upload\/2007\/07\/ward_5_ready_to_rumble\/leeandbilly1.html\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"float: left\"><a onclick=\"window.open('http:\/\/blogs.twincities.com\/city_hall_scoop\/upload\/2007\/07\/ward_5_ready_to_rumble\/leeandbilly22.html', 'popup', 'width=490,height=370,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.twincities.com\/city_hall_scoop\/upload\/2007\/07\/ward_5_ready_to_rumble\/leeandbilly22.html\" \/><\/div>\n<p>But the meeting really got interesting when Billy Dinkel, a District 10 board member and exec at the St. Paul Area Chamber of Commerce, pointed out that MGM honchos were pouring money into Helgen\u2019s reelection campaign.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now, bear in mind these District Council meetings usually make watching paint dry seem pretty cool.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Not this time:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Helgen said he thought Dinkel was out of line bringing politics into the MGM discussion, and decided to tell him so after it was over.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float: right\"><a onclick=\"window.open('http:\/\/blogs.twincities.com\/city_hall_scoop\/upload\/2007\/07\/ward_5_ready_to_rumble\/leeandbilly2.html', 'popup', 'width=490,height=360,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.twincities.com\/city_hall_scoop\/upload\/2007\/07\/ward_5_ready_to_rumble\/leeandbilly2.html\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI took a step to him and said, \u2018That\u2019s not right. This is a community meeting,\u2019\u201d Helgen said.<\/p>\n<p>Dinkel said the campaign donations were relevant to the discussion, and defended the move. \u201cIt was a legitimate issue. It gives the illusion. It doesn\u2019t mean there\u2019s anything wrong, but it gives the illusion,\u201d Dinkel said.<\/p>\n<p>Exactly how heated it got is conjecture, but by all accounts the two men were nose-to-nose. At one point, Dinkel told Helgen \u201cGo ahead and do it,\u201d or something along those lines.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when David Haas stepped between the two men. But if they really wanted a piece of each other, the 5\u201911\u201d Hass couldn\u2019t have stopped them &#8212; Helgen stands 6\u20194\u201d and weighs 250, while Dinkel checks in at 6\u20192\u201d and 225.<\/p>\n<p>Helgen said he felt like Dinkel disrespected him by raising the issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t mind having heated political discussions with people, but as an elected official I\u2019m entitled to some respect,\u201d Helgen said.<\/p>\n<p>(Incidentally, Councilmember Jay Benanav also told us he felt disrespected by Dinkel at a recent District 10 meeting.
