{"id":10808,"date":"2010-05-10T06:36:23","date_gmt":"2010-05-10T11:36:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=10808"},"modified":"2010-05-09T22:39:39","modified_gmt":"2010-05-10T03:39:39","slug":"busy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=10808","title":{"rendered":"Busy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I love this story:\u00a0 the world&#8217;s biggest beaver dam <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/afp\/20100505\/sc_afp\/canadascienceenvironmentanimalbeaver\">has been discovered in Canada:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A Canadian ecologist has discovered the world&#8217;s largest beaver dam in a remote area of northern Alberta, an animal-made structure so large it is visible from space.<\/p>\n<p>Researcher Jean Thie said Wednesday he used satellite imagery and Google Earth software to locate the dam, which is about 850 metres (2,800 feet) long on the southern edge of Wood Buffalo National Park.<\/p>\n<p>Average beaver dams in Canada are 10 to 100 metres long, and only rarely do they reach 500 metres.<\/p>\n<p>First discovered in October 2007, the gigantic dam is located in a virtually inaccessible part of the park south of Lac Claire, about 190 kilometres (120 miles) northeast of Fort McMurray.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The dam&#8217;s been underway for decades.<\/p>\n<p>Impressively, it&#8217;s a bit of infrastructure that&#8217;s been built with no debt and no tax hikes on the local population.<\/p>\n<p>In other Canadian rodent news, the Lemming population is working on their mass transit system.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I love this story:\u00a0 the world&#8217;s biggest beaver dam has been discovered in Canada: A Canadian ecologist has discovered the world&#8217;s largest beaver dam in a remote area of northern Alberta, an animal-made structure so large it is visible from space.
