{"id":1079,"date":"2007-07-20T16:59:23","date_gmt":"2007-07-20T21:59:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=1079"},"modified":"2007-07-20T16:59:23","modified_gmt":"2007-07-20T21:59:23","slug":"perfection-is-the-answer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=1079","title":{"rendered":"Perfection Is The Answer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Any state legislator that has ever bounced a check should be disqualified from budget debates.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Any solon that has ever gotten a speeding ticket should be disqualified from speaking about crime.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Any elected official that has gotten less than a &#8220;C&#8221; in a class, ever, should be barred from debate on education.<\/p>\n<p>Absurd, right?<\/p>\n<p>Not if you&#8217;re a kept leftyblogger, apparently.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s back up a bit.<\/p>\n<p>Gay marriage, to me, is not the <em>most <\/em>important issue on the public plate right now.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, make no mistake &#8211; I think &#8220;marriage&#8221; should be a purely religious institution, and that the state&#8217;s only interest in a perfect world would be that of enforcing a civil contract.\u00a0 Hence, I think that civil unions, as a contractual entity, should be legal.\u00a0 For that matter, I think that any church or religious body that can theologically justify &#8220;marriage&#8221; between people of the same sex should be able to do it (although suffice to say that I&#8217;ll have an interesting time debating <em>that <\/em>bit of instatheology).<\/p>\n<p>I believe this because, while I think there&#8217;s a legitimate case to be made for same-sex civil unions, there is none I can see\u00a0for gay marriage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But since I, myself, am divorced, apparently <a href=\"http:\/\/minnesotamonitor.com\/showDiary.do?diaryId=2093\">according to kept leftyblogger Andy Birkey<\/a>, I should just shut up and let everyone who&#8217;s never held out an opinion about what marriage should be about.<\/p>\n<p>In this piece, Birkey takes the crimes, found and alleged, of <em>three <\/em>Republican legislators (two in Minnesota, one national)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>These &#8220;pro-family&#8221; failures demonstrate that we should be suspicious when politicians try to legislate rigid traditional standards on people&#8217;s private romantic lives, because chances are, they won&#8217;t be able to live up to the expectations they set for the rest of us.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Get that?<\/p>\n<p>Out of <em>millions <\/em>of Republicans, and dozens of GOP legislators in this state, the failures of <em>two people <\/em>invalidate the <em>entire case against same sex marriage<\/em>?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Wow.<\/p>\n<p>Since the Democrat majority leader got pulled over for Drunk Driving after the last session, the DFL should be ignored on public safety issues?<\/p>\n<p>So since a number of prominent DFLers supported Kathleen Soliah, we should ignore the DFL on terrorism and crime issues?<\/p>\n<p>Because of William Jefferson, Democrats should shut up about corruption?<\/p>\n<p>Because Jeff Fecke has never admitted to cribbing AP quotes, we should ignore everything the Minnesota Monitor says?<\/p>\n<p>(That last may be a bad example).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Any state legislator that has ever bounced a check should be disqualified from budget debates.\u00a0 Any solon that has ever gotten a speeding ticket should be disqualified from speaking about crime.\u00a0 Any elected official that has gotten less than a &#8220;C&#8221; in a class, ever, should be barred from debate on education.
