&#8211; Facts At A Glance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>General facts about guns and the Second Amendment, and the things the left and media get wrong about both.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Numbers: \u00a0Gun Crime Rates<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gun Crime rates <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewsocialtrends.org\/2013\/05\/07\/gun-homicide-rate-down-49-since-1993-peak-public-unaware\/\">have fallen 50% in the past 20 years<\/a>.\n<ul>\n<li>Gun homicides, specifically, are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/report-sharp-drop-in-gun-violence-but-most-killings-still-involve-firearms\/2013\/05\/07\/28f96904-b694-11e2-92f3-f291801936b8_story.html\">off nearly 40%<\/a> in that same time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Gun Crime has fallen the most &#8211; generally &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-government\/2015\/01\/28\/fbi-report-more-guns-correlated-with-less-crime-in-first-half-of-2014\/\">in places with the most liberal gun laws<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Gun <em>Deaths <\/em>including suicide <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1448529\/\">are higher <em>per capita<\/em> in the sparsely-populated rural West<\/a> &#8211; but murder is much higher in America&#8217;s cities.\n<ul>\n<li>Although some one the left claim that gun violence (and violence in general) is higher in states that vote Republican, that&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=5427\">misleading<\/a>; crime, like politics, rarely breaks down neatly by states.\u00a0 Illinois, Michigan and Missouri are low-crime states that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wnd.com\/2013\/02\/u-s-cities-as-dangerous-as-deadliest-3rd-world-countries\/?cat_orig=us\">include exceptionally high-crime cities<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>If you <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=56596\">leave out the crime rates of America&#8217;s 50 highest-crime cities,<\/a> the nation&#8217;s crime rate drops by 40%.<\/li>\n<li>If you <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=56598\">leave out the cities <em>and <\/em>the Deep South<\/a> &#8211; where there is a cultural tradition of tolerance of violence pretty unique in the US &#8211; the US homicide and gun homicide rates are about equal to Minnesota, which currently has a crime rate about 1\/3 the national average.<\/li>\n<li>According to a study in Milwaukee, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wnd.com\/2013\/03\/most-murder-victims-in-big-cities-have-criminal-record\/\">vast majority of murder victims have some sort of criminal record<\/a> or another.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Fake But Inaccurate: \u00a0Common Chanting Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;40% of guns are purchased without background checks&#8221; &#8211; No, they are not:\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;FactCheck.org&#8221;, no friend to shooters, says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/2013\/03\/guns-acquired-without-background-checks\/\">it&#8217;s between 1-4%<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;The Gun Show background check will\u00a0deter criminals&#8221; &#8211; according to the Department of Justice, <a href=\"http:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/news\/7\/71\/915770\/university-chicago-survey-finds-crooks-get-guns-from-pals-dont-keep-them-long\">nearly 3\/4 of criminals get their guns from friends, straw buyers, fellow criminals or family<\/a>.\n<ul>\n<li>A study in &#8220;Preventive Medicine&#8221; magazine <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0091743515001486\">had the same conclusion<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;There&#8217;s an avalanche of crime with &#8216;assault weapons'&#8221; &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/about-us\/cjis\/ucr\/crime-in-the-u.s\/2011\/crime-in-the-u.s.-2011\/tables\/expanded-homicide-data-table-8\">Long arms of all types are used in about 5% of homicides per year<\/a>; half of them are common shotguns. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fox5dc.com\/news\/local-news\/11595311-story\">Nobody keeps track of how many &#8220;ugly black rifles&#8221; are used in crimes<\/a>, but it&#8217;s a vanishingly tiny percentage of a minority of homicides.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Criminals can buy guns via the internet, same as ordering a video game&#8221; &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/fact-checker\/wp\/2016\/01\/06\/obamas-claim-that-internet-gun-sellers-operate-under-a-different-set-of-rules\/\">No, they can&#8217;t<\/a>. \u00a0The rules are the same as buying from any gun store.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mass Shootings<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Most mass shootings\u00a0<em>don&#8217;t\u00a0<\/em>occur in gun free zones&#8221; &#8211; False. \u00a0There have been a tiny number of mass shootings &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/CPRC-Mass-Shooting-Analysis-Bloomberg2.pdf\">three in the past decade<\/a> &#8211; in places where citizens have a right to carry firearms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Media Bias<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although it&#8217;s something of a historical artifact, there&#8217;s little reason to believe things have changed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davekopel.org\/Media\/MediaBias.htm\">since David Kopel compiled this list of articles and studies<\/a>on media bias on the gun issue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Civilian Carry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Concealed_carry_in_the_United_States\">As of January 2015<\/a>,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>41 states are &#8220;shall issue&#8221; (and Connecticut and Delaware, while legally &#8220;may issue&#8221;, are in practice &#8220;shall issue&#8221; states as well).\n<ul>\n<li>Alaska, Arizona, Kansas, Maine, and Vermont are &#8220;Consitutional Carry&#8221; states; they have no restrictions on open or concealed carry\u00a0<em>for law-abiding citizens<\/em>. \u00a0Wyoming requires non-residents to have a valid permit in their home state.<\/li>\n<li>Arkansas,Idaho, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, and Oklahoma have fairly limited restrictions on concealed or open carry.<\/li>\n<li>Montana, Utah, South Carolina, and New Hampshire<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>12 states and the District of Columbia are &#8220;may issue&#8221; (note CT and DE, above). \u00a0DC, New Jersey, Maryland and Hawaii, while legally &#8220;may issue&#8221;, are in practice &#8220;no issue&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Most US overseas possessions &#8211; Samoa, the Marianas, the Virgin Islands &#8211;
