Instead of attempting to defend the continued extra judicial killings of ethnic minorities by security services — I would think a much better argument could be made by pointing out that 97% of violent minority deaths are occurring in their own communities. These protests and by extension the political discourse doesn’t address this phenomena.

Oh, I have no emotional reaction to Floyd’s death at all. Maybe Floyd didn’t know that the bill he passed was fake. I understand that the usual way you pass a bill you know is fake is to do it at a bar on a busy night, not at a convenience store.

I lived in South Minneapolis in my teens and early twenties. That was a long time ago. I have a nephew who lives a little south of the art institute. I visited him a year or two ago and saw that the area had improved quite a bit since the early 80s.
My nephew was arrested (shortly) for breaking the curfew last week.
While I was down in South Minneapolis I stopped by Uncle Hugos book store & chatted with Don Blyly. I was a regular there from the days when they were at 4th & Franklin. The rioters burned Uncle Hugos last week, I doubt if it will open it again.

Back in the day I had a good friend who owned Wreck Brothers Auto Body on 38th and Chicago — used to purchase soda at the convenience store (now Cup Foods) across the street from his shop. The neighborhood has changed significantly since then.
The story I heard, back in the 80s, was that any cops who were too gung ho for the suburbs were sent to work in Minneapolis. Could have been true. Don’t know about now. For a while Minneapolis tried to force Minneapolis cops to live in Minneapolis, but they discovered that not many people both wanted to be cops in Minneapolis and live in Minneapolis.
I wouldn’t want to be a cop there. You are dealing with some hard cases, probably all hard cases, and a lack of community support.

I have yet to read an account sympathetic to the police, but I suppose what is happening is that the police are pushing back against rules imposed by administrators and politicians that they feel puts them at greater hazard.
If you disarmed all of the riot cops (which you could do), I think that very few cops would show up for work.
In any event, I think I have commented on cops versus civil unrest before; American cops don’t have tools to deal with large scale civil unrest. If you want to see it done effectively, look for videos on youtube showing the Russian or Chinese riot police at work.
You could never get away with that in the US, and you should not get away with it in the US.
The police in America are supposed to address criminal problems, not political problems. If the police can’t deal with civil unrest in the US, that is a political failure. And who are the politicians in charge of the cities where the riots are occurring? It ain’t Trump and the GOP.

So Chauvin had his knee on Floyd’s neck for nine minutes (or eight minutes). When did Floyd die? Was it while Chauvin had his knee on Floyd’s neck, or was it later, in the ambulance?
Later in the ambulance, later, maybe the hospital….
But my own anecdotal evidence on the MPD, I was called for jury duty only a few years ago, yeah, they told us jurors, not to say anything on social media while the trial was ongoing and not mention names… Something like that, so I don’t think this should violate any confidentiality.

The police officers in this case were fine imho. One white, one black. They also I believe called in their accompanying team, 2 more but I don’t really remember anything about them.

And how about the metroline?? Are those transit police (I know that exists but it seems they were in their blue uniforms too)? I have rode it and sometimes in the afternoon, all of these mostly very young uniformed officers… Male and female… they were all okay too. They didn’t seem like much on being heavies like the real police officers though. Not sure of their exact status.

The paramedics worked on him and realized it was beyond them; the ambulance pulled over and a fire department crew met them and worked on him, too.
