Once Again, Minnesota is an Embarassment to The Nation

Wellstone, Dayton, Ventura now Franken.

Strange things keep happening in Minnesota, where the disputed recount in the Senate race between Norm Coleman and Al Franken may be nearing a dubious outcome. Thanks to the machinations of Democratic Secretary of State Mark Ritchie and a meek state Canvassing Board, Mr. Franken may emerge as an illegitimate victor.

Mr. Franken started the recount 215 votes behind Senator Coleman, but he now claims a 225-vote lead and suddenly the man who was insisting on “counting every vote” wants to shut the process down. He’s getting help from Mr. Ritchie and his four fellow Canvassing Board members, who have delivered inconsistent rulings and are ignoring glaring problems with the tallies.

And that’s just politics, not to mention professional sports. At least in this case we can rightfully claim he’s not a Minnesotan.

    Yeah, that’s something to be embarassed about. Contrast that with what conservatives would note about the Bush/Gore fiasco; the Supreme Court simply insisted that Florida law be followed in the Florida recounts.

  28. You didn’t read carefully, AC. I said that Bush’s team correctly saw that Gore’s people intended to recount the FL votes until they had a plurality, and then stop recounting. No ‘payback’ involved on the part of the dems the franken/coleman race. SOP for you guys. This, obviously, is what they would have done in 2000 if the USSC hadn’t stepped in and put the kabosh on it.

    You have faith that nothing on the original could contradict or supplement the info on the reissue in a meaningful way.

  37. The election board in charge of the recount did not consider 14th amendment ‘equal treatment’ arguments. They said that 14th amendment issues were not in their charter of things to do consider.
    Mark Ritchie has been identified as one of those democrats put into their position because after FL 2000 the dems wanted their guys involved in the recount process in every battleground state. Is it too much of a push to believe that it was Ritchie who convinced the other board members that 14th amendment concerns were ‘above their pay grade’?
    If Coleman’s people push this to the SC citing 14th amendment issues, won’t Ritchie be the guy whose job it is to convince the SC that all 14th amendment considerations in the recount have been carefully considered by the canvassing board?
    I live about 5,000 mls from Minnesota so perhaps I’m ill-informed.

    I don’t know about him, but I do — assuming that that’s the law, which it may well be. I think that the idea of trying to interpret intent from the ballot is a bad one, and demonstrably attractive for mischief-makers, for example, but the way to fix that is by changing the law, not ignoring it.

    I think the idea of having more votes than voters casting votes come out of a precinct is absurd, but, hey, if that’s the law, then that’s the law.
