Guns, Night And Fog

I got a lot of emails yesterday about Slow Joe Biden’s hint that the President is going to start regulating guns by executive order.

I briefly got angry.  Then I remembered – it’s politics.

Obama won by appealing to the nation’s legion of addlepated and intellectually-overpraised – but he’s no dummy himself.

The talk of “gun control by executive order” is real enough – but it’s not the real order of business.

Vice President Joe Biden revealed that President Barack Obama might use an executive order to deal with guns.

“The president is going to act,” said Biden, giving some comments to the press before a meeting with victims of gun violence. “There are executives orders, there’s executive action that can be taken. We haven’t decided what that is yet. But we’re compiling it all with the help of the attorney general and the rest of the cabinet members as well as legislative action that we believe is required.”

The threat is real – but it’s still a distraction.

The economy is sputtering; Obama is dealing with the slowest recovery in history, and even a few of the low-information masses who voted for him are figuring out that all is not as they were told. He’s got to dominate the narrative – and that means getting the masses of middle-Americans who underperformed for Romney to distract themselves with an emotional hot-button issue.

Which isn’t to say “fake” issue; Obama does want to ban guns, and if he can find a politically-palatable way to do it, he will.

The proper response is “go for it, and watch every single red-state Democrat go down in flames” – but to focus on what Obama is trying to distract from; the economy, the deficit, and the debt.

In other words, to walk and chew gum at the same time.

As this last election showed, 50.3% of our neighbors can’t.  It’s up to the rest of us to save the Constitution and the economy and the country.

  1. I think one possibility is that President Obama wants us to stew in our own juices for a while – buy tons of guns and ammo to prepare for the worst-case scenario we can whip up. Then Vice-president Biden will make all type of dire predictions to further the stewing process.

Then, the president will step in and make proposals that are far less threatening than the vice-president’s were. At this point, we’ll consider ourselve lucky and gratefully accept half the expected beating. May I have another?

Or, just as likely, President Obama is in his (hopefully) last term. I don’t think he feels any allegiance to anyone – literally. He’s going to grab as much as he possibly can and let his party fend for themselves. Worst case scenario, he’ll be unsuccessful, the democrats will take a hit (he doesn’t care because they’ll be of little use to him later), and he’ll move back to Hawaii (or any other country he may have visited) and live happily ever after with enough sycophants and money to last him the rest of his life.

Many details of the Newtown tragedy still have largely been kept from the general public. Like potential gun restrictions, we’re being allowed to stew about it and write our own worst-case narrative about how it went down. Possibly factually inaccurate, but useful to promote draconian gun laws. We’re using half a story to justify the president’s actions.

  2. Fresh off the press – recommendation #1 is eliminate individual (person to person) sales of firearms.

    And so it starts…

  3. Meanwhile, the Hurricane Sandy victims can’t get paid and the media is giving their Dear Leader a pass. FEMA is also getting a pass after all of the lies they told about pre-positioned generators, food, water, etc. At least after Katrina, payments were getting out by the same time period. God forbid that he be portrayed as hating east coasters or some other nonsense as was levied against Bush.

  4. No, you mean “the gunshow loophole.”

Which, by necessity, will first require that all existing guns and their be “recorded” (not registered) so that when the guns change hands the government can keep track of the transaction. It’s just common-sense gun safety. Do it for Gabby …

  5. Don’t forget that Biden went first in speaking out for gay marriage. Trial balloon? After a little time to gauge reaction (read the polls), Obama announced he had “evolved”.
