The left, the media and the Obama Administration – pardon the redundancy – have done their level best this past month to resurrect the spectre of gun control aimed at the law-abiding civilian.
According to more and more polls, they’ve failed:
A recent Rasmussen Reports poll found that 54 percent of American adults would feel safer if their child’s school had an armed security guard.
And it seems Wayne LaPierre’s speech has exposed a vein of tough-minded pragmatism afoot in the country:
The same poll found that among parents of school-aged children, support for armed guards is even higher. Sixty two percent of such parents would feel safer with an armed security guard at the school, while 22 percent would feel safer if their child attended a gun-free school.

And even as the gun banners seek to blame and attack NRA for the actions of a killer, Gallup’s poll reveals that NRA still has a 54 percent favorable rating among Americans. It is worth noting that, as of January 3rd, the Real Clear Politics average of President Obama’s approval rating is slightly lower, at 53.4 percent.
This is a big lesson for Second Amendment people; don’t panic. And stay active. It’s because of a generation’s worth of relentless activism that we’ve taught Americans – real Americans [1], anyway – the truth about this issue. America has grown up over the past forty years – from being led around on the issue by the in-the-bag media, to having independent thought and reasoning.
And there’s a lesson there for conservatives, the Tea Party and the GOP; people can learn the truth, and truth and reason can outflank the media. But it takes time, determination, money, patience and courage.
The Second Amendment movement and all its component parts – and the NRA is the biggest single component, but by no means the only important one – has grown into the most successful grass-roots political efforts over the long term since the Abolition movement. And it’s gotten there by relentless effort, and by realizing the battle is a marathon, not a sprint. The rest of conservative America needs to remember that.
The orcs will never waste a crisis; there’ll be other atrocities, and the left will exploit them. Now is no time for complacency.
But panic is equally out of place.
[1] And yes, a “Real American”, in the context of this article, is an American that believes and practices the original intent of the Second Amendment. You don’t have to own a gun to be a Real American – but those who attack the civil rights (including the right to keep and bear arms) of the law-abiding American are, in fact, not.
BTW, I can’t think of a better time to renew that NRA membership. Even if you’re not a big 2nd Amendment supporter, the entertainment you’ll recieve when you proudly wear your free NRA ball cap into the local Starbucks is worth twice the price!

Oddly enough, although just as true as it was in Florida, I somehow doubt Obama will be telling us how much these kids look like the son he never had.
Mitch, check out the NRA Store there’s a surprising amount of handy stuff. I recently bought the NRA Hitchsafe (SA 24394 ) which has been remarkably handy and has paid for itself. The NRA Low Profile Pistol and Rifle Rest (SA 24320) was also money well spent.
Oddly enough, we’re not hearing much support for more gun regulation down here…

She hosed him down with a .38 snubby, 5 for 6 (nice shooting lady!) but he was still ticking. Thankfully the attacker was too stupid to count or he might have made a last ditch attack.
A nice 20 rd. mag leaves no doubt “there’s more where that came from” in even the dimmest brainpans.
Now, I know what you’re thinking, punk. You’re thinking, “Did she fire six shots or only five?” Well, considering that this is a .38 stubby and will seriously ruin your day, the question you ought to be asking yourself is, “How stupid do I have to be to break into a home that doesn’t have a ‘This is a Gun Free Zone’ sign.”

A couple of years ago, I joined the National Association for Gun Rights. IMO they are much more active in fighting threats to the 2nd Amendment than the NRA. They are also a little less mainstream than the NRA, so I think that makes them more effective.
Boss, I’ve been a GOA member for a decade and an NRA member for three decades. I’ve often been tempted to becoming a lifer (it would have been cheaper), but there’ve been time the NRA has gone wobbly and I’m glad I didn’t. GOA has never gone wobbly.
The fact that the NRA is so strongly demonized, even when they have no direct involvement in an incident is an indication of their power and the fear they provoke in the anti-gun crowd.
Police administrators who directly or indirectly criticize the NRA neglect to mention that the organization is the largest provider of police firearms training. Their instructor schools include patrol rifle, basic, handgun, shotgun, and other related topics.
NRA certification is pretty much the gold standard among law enforcement instructors and trainers. The training is provided pretty much at cost and is provided by well-qualified professional law enforcement and civilian personnel.
The Eddie Eagle child firearms safety program is widely recognized (to the chagrin of some making the recognition) as a very effective program. It’s basic message is for kids who see an unattended firearm to “stop, leave the area, and call an adult”. It has nothing to do with shooting or firearms handling. It is also provided free of charge to law enforcement agencies and includes videos, work books, hand-out and a detailed curriculum. Like DARE but done right.
The NRA also provides a death benefit at no extra charge (used to be $10,000, not sure now) to members who are law enforcement officers who were killed in the line of duty.
Sorry for the infomercial. However, these facts seem to be ignored by the law enforcement administrators who happily take advantage of the benefits, and the mainstream media who happily jump on the anti-NRA wagon without providing all the facts.
Correction to my pervious post: The NRA is the largest PRIVATE provider of firearms training. Obviously the military and some other governmental agencies are much bigger.
And the death benefit is paid to those killed in the line of duty due to criminal activity. Being shot by a bank robber would qualify, being killed accidentally wouldn’t.
