I have only one firm belief about the American political system, and that is this: God is a Republican and Santa Claus is a Democrat.
God is an elderly or, at any rate, middle aged male, a stern fellow, patriarchal rather than paternal and a great believer in rules and regulations. He holds men accountable for their actions. He has little apparent concern for the material well being of the disadvantaged. He is politically connected, socially powerful and holds the mortgage on literally everything in the world. God is difficult. God is unsentimental. It is very hard to get into God’s heavenly country club.
Santa Claus is another matter. He’s cute. He’s nonthreatening. He’s always cheerful. And he loves animals. He may know who’s been naughty and who’s been nice, but he never does anything about it. He gives everyone everything they want without the thought of quid pro quo. He works hard for charities, and he’s famously generous to the poor. Santa Claus is preferable to God in every way but one: There is no such thing as Santa Claus.
It was “Protect your lady parts” vs. “Er, that sure is a lot of debt to rack up with all those entitlements to pay”.
Two of the most annoying things about talking with liberals for this last three days (also last 15 years):
- How many of them think the January “fiscal cliff” and sequestration are the real financial time bomb
- How many of them, when asked what we do about all the debt Obama is racking up, and how much more of it he plans to rack up, seem to think that “Bush did it too!” is an answer.
Thank God – both the real one and O’Rourke’s – for the House of Representatives.
Given progressives are innumerate – a failing that will systematically impoverish and all but eradicate the US middle class in the coming couple of generations.
The more crippling short term outcome of the election is the paucity of credible GOP leadership both nationally and locally. That lack of leadership will manifest in the near complete capitulation of the House to whatever “Solution” the president proposes to the “fiscal cliff”. The profligate spending will continue unabated and even increase into the 2014 election where Trumpka has promised the unions will complete the job by returning the GOP to minority status.
Thanks for pulling that O’Rourke quote, Mitch. I’ve thought about that essay quite a lot in recent days.

The last couple of days I’ve been reflecting on the Romney loss and trying to gauge how so many learned people could be so wrong (Rove, Morris, Barone, et al). Now as the exit polls are being completed a few truths are beginning to be revealed.
As soulless and craven as it was, Chris Matthews “thanking God” for Superstorm Sandy (a storm which killed dozens of people, did hundreds of millions in property damage and caused Obama to note that the default position of government is to hinder people trying to get things done) was accurate. Some 40% of the people who were undecided two weeks prior to the election who then voted for Obama did so based on his “all jacket, no bombers” performance in NJ with the Springsteen groupie. So for all the hectoring and gloating from the Lefty’s I’ve seen here and elsewhere about why Romney lost (too far right!?!), we’re learning that a few well placed cameras (ignoring the suffering in ‘working class’ Staten Island and Rockaway) allowed President Kardashian to appear Presidential – no thoughts, no words, just images.
The modern image we have of jolly old St Nick -Santa Claus- was created by the art department at Coca Cola. We shouldn’t be surprised to learn that Barry was sold to his fans like sugar-water; good times and refreshment hiding rotting teeth and an expanding waistline.

Um … I believe the fellow who wrote [or transcribed, take your pick] Isaiah and that other person who did a lot of quoting from it around the Year 0K more or less, may just have … a slight disagreement on that part.
Not going to tackle the rest, not on a dodgy stomach. I just want to mention though that my reference to the fiscal cliff was only in relation to why the markets were down following the election, and that came pretty much straight from senior investment analysts quoted in respected business journals.

It is an answer, it’s just a really dumb answer.
Especially since first time candidate Barack Obama noticed that President Bush “did it” and called it “unpatriotic” among other things. And then President Obama “did it” to a degree far worse than President Bush.
But don’t worry: Barack Obama supporters will believe (a) The President of the United States of America really can’t affect the U.S. economy that much, or (b) it’s all magically some Republicans fault. Whichever is convenient.
Troy, it’s a trap. If the GOP tries to prevent the debt bomb from exploding it will be their fault when it does because in the eyes of the Demonrats “we didn’t spend enough”, to quote the incorrigible Paul Krugman among others.
Obviously, he again used people for his benefit, now he has absolutely no reason to speed up the relief efforts and his two puppets, Cuomo and Bloomberg are falling right in line! I predict that we see riots very soon.
Oh, and to you resident left wing trolls that show up on here to show your illiteracy on most matters, your dear leader didn’t waste time taking the first step to giving our sovereignty to the UN. Yesterday, he accelerated the small arms treaty to negate the 2nd Amendment. He will continue to use the UN to bypass the Constitution. There is also a fee on all financial transactions in the US in the works. Guess where that money is going? Yet again, the US taxpayers fund UN follies and the World Bank.

Obama’s “war on women” and “vote to protect your lady parts” rhetoric was crass pandering.
One is one guy who should have known better. The other was the considered commentary of a major party on the attention span of its constituents.

I guess perhaps I should have set the context then, and not elide (Yes, I have found a new word. It is glorious. I will use it often. Thankyou for asking) the implied plurality in:

OK then. Akin we all know. Mourdock (R-IN) with “…pregnancy resulting from rape is “something that God intended to happen”. Or State Rep Roger Rivard (R-WI) with “some girls, they rape so easy”. Or Joel Walsh’s (R-IL) “The life of the woman is not an exception”. Pity, he had fought his way back to a 3 point lead until this fell. All three defending their position with explanations quickly shot down medical doctors. I’m not even going to bother researching Tom Smith’s (Candidate: R-PA) “Having a baby out of wedlock – is similar [to rape]” comment, nor John Koster’s (Candidate: R-WA) “on the rape thing … how does more violence onto a woman’s body [ie abortion] make it better?” remark because I want to get to bed (and Akin’s, Mourdock’s, and Rivard’s comments are damning enough already).
I’ll repeat: “Which one?” … is not good. And they all lost.
So Q.E.D. quod erat demonstrandum yourself, Mitch, and I’ll match and raise with a good old fashioned “a fortiori” and “cuiusvis hominis est errare, nullius nisi insipientis in errore perseverare” as trump for “those who are first made proud”.
