The Incredible Shrinking Governor: Through The Years

Let’s go back in time:

2005: Confronted with a nonspecific threat of terrorism, then-Senator Mark Dayton shuts down his Senate office in DC, leaving the job of doing the nation’s business to the 534 other Congresspeople who, for whatever reason, didn’t.

His idea of leadership – to lead the run away from doing his job.

2011: Confronted by a GOP majority that outpolled him in the 2010 elections, and propped up only by a series of meaningless, potemkin polls, Governor Dayton does…

…well, more or less the same thing, asking for a “mediator” to work toward a compromise give him political cover for the fact that he holds absolutely no cards.

Remember – he’s been calling the GOP “obstructionist” (I’ve added emphasis):

At a press conference, Dayton said he has asked key cabinet members not to appear before the Legislative Commission on Planning and Fiscal Policy. The joint legislative panel is scheduled to meet at 2 p.m. today to seek details on the governor’s latest budget proposal.

Dayton said his administration was not given adequate notice of the meeting, and would not participate. He said there is no point in discussing the details of a budget agreement until Republicans agree to compromise on some kind of revenue increase to help balance the budget.

“We’re not at the beck and call of the Legislature. They’re not in session. They had their five months,” he said.

They had five months dealing with a Governor whose only concept of “compromise” is “I get everything I asked for even though I’m in the weaker position”.

By the way – ask your lawyer (or any lawyer) about the wisdom of “getting a mediator” when your opponent is dealing in bad faith.  There is none.

And fortunately, at least this time the MNGOP knows it.

  1. Glad you captured this, Mitch. The version of the story at the link now doesn’t contain the section you highlighted.

  2. I stand corrected — the Stassen-Berger piece doesn’t have the section you highlighted. The first link does.

  3. “I don’t want you to talk to my people. I want you to talk to me. And I’m not talking.”

It’s the kind of response a mafia Don would give to the press.

  4. And yet what you term potemkin polls are consistent with the polling numbers nationwide where Democratic governors are doing well, and pretty consistently, Republican governors are on a steep slope fast becoimng more and more unpopular. That argues the poll numbers here are probably correct too; conservative policies are hugely unpopular.

Especially the policy that refuses to address the revenue side of the budget or taxing the rich.

Yup, Dayton closed his office because he thought at the time that he was protecting his staff. In hindsight he regrets the decision. So what? That was six years ago.

He was willing to address the budget early in the legislative session.

The GOP refused until it was too late.

Dayton proposed a solution, and he has proposed compromises. So far the GOP has not.

YOUR side is the one that is unpopular, and wrong. YOUR side is the one that is dealing in bad faith; your side is the one that has given nothing in response to Dayton having given things.

But keep whistling in the dark, pretending otherwise. When you aren’t making up things to try to smear democrats, like not really addressing the facts of that limo piece yesterday.

  5. I would be delighted to act as mediator. The first thing I would do is tell the congenital idiot to grow the eff up and listen to the representatives of the people.
This is what happens when you elect a spoiled trust fund baby governor.

  6. Of course, you realize what Dayton opting for a mediator means, correct? His job is not necessary (since he’s not DOING IT) and we won’t miss it at all when the shutdown happens.

  7. Don’t forget, libturd comment trolls, that Manic Depressive Mark also promised, ON TAPE, IN A DEBATE, that he would not shut down the government on a budget impasse.

If government does shutdown (and we can all be so lucky!), there’s only one person in Minnesota responsible: Mark Dayton. He vetoed every budget bill. His hand shut it down.

  8. Has the Governor gotten around to explaining what he needs the extra $2,000,000,000.00 in pocket change for yet?

  9. Hope the Twin Cities MSM keeps spotlighting Governor Moonshine. The more this guy explains himself the more people are going to ask themselves why they voted for him.

As one of one hundred Senator Moonshine was able to hide under his desk, as one of one Governor Moonshine is there for everyone to see.

  10. Weiner is a featured speaker at todays Wisc Democrat convention in Milwaukee. Is Foot around? His commentary on this could be good.

  11. Democrats are running ads non-stop on local TV, attacking Republicans. It seems that they say if we take money from the “richest” (sic, I think they mean highest income earners) 2%, then we all get free unicorns.

They ran ads non-stop last summer against Emmer and I think that had a big role in his losing. Are the Republicans going to respond?

  12. I think that the GOP needs to make it very clear that due to effects like capital flight, it is by no means assured that Dayton’s tax hikes would generate anything near $1.8 billion, but (just like as is occurring in Illinois, and has in Maryland, Oregon, and New York) rather would generate far less–perhaps even a loss.

  13. “Weiner is a featured speaker at todays Wisc Democrat convention in Milwaukee. Is Foot around? His commentary on this could be good.”

Meh, I’m sure there’ll be pictures of Weiner at the event. I really don’t need to dick around with this. Penis.

  14. Dog Gone lied “He (Dayton) was willing to address the budget early in the legislative session.
I have only one thing to say.
    Bullshit.

  15. Dayton has painted himself in a corner. He never bargained for this and, quite frankly, I expect a meltdown.

  16. “Dayton proposed a solution, and he has proposed compromises. So far the GOP has not.”

You are such a dumb ass, Dog breath!

Just like your dear leader Obammy, Dimwit Dayton never submitted a budget! He’s doing like all of you libturds do. Do nothing constructive, sit on the sidelines and point fingers. These juvenile practices are catching up to him. If you ever came out from under the flat rock that you live under and actually talked to real people, you might learn that. In other words, get out of your mom’s basement and quit relying on left wing nut polls and publications. Loser!

  17. TBS: Ben has repeatedly estimated that by Halloween we will have a Governor Prettner-Solon. Wouldn’t that be something?

  18. “Especially the policy that refuses to address the revenue side of the budget or taxing the rich.”

DG, the MNGOP budget that Dimwit Dayton vetoed actually INCREASED spending and definitely taxed the rich.

    FACTCHECK that, you dumb biatch.

  19. Chuck, Weiner has cut his appearance at the WI Democratic Convention. But don’t worry John Edwards is still available.

  20. But don’t worry John Edwards is still available.

Can someone under indictment still go out and attend functions like that???

  21. “Dayton proposed a solution, and he has proposed compromises. So far the GOP has not.”

    I’ll say it again:

    Dayton won by 8700 votes.

The Legislature flipped due to a decisive and historically large GOP win.

Dayton is NOT in a position to be demanding compromise. If anyone has a mandate, it is the GOP dominated legislature.

  22. Regarding Dayton, his compromise is simply based on 10% increases in spending annually, is it not–and his original proposal was based on something like 15% increases in spending annually.

OK, what part of “unsustainable spending increases” is doggone having trouble understanding? What part of “high income people aren’t going to stick around to be flayed/fleeced by Governor Dayton” is the left not getting?

  23. Yeah, I’m loving the “compromise”:

“You know, I really want to blow either $4,000,000,000.00 or $5,000,000,000.00, but in the interest ‘compromise’, I will be satisfied with burning through only $2,000,000,000.00. I’ll let you know later what specific items I want to spend the money on. But do it now, or I’ll shut down state government and blame you for it. And don’t you give me any of that ‘budget crisis’ crap either! Suck it up, sell a Renoir or two, and Give Me My Money!”

  24. “Can someone under indictment still go out and attend functions like that???”

Sure you can Brad! All you have to do is have a (D) after your name and be talking to other (D) libturds! Then, it’s anything goes.

  25. *sigh*

Dog Gone, at this point, do the world a favor:

If you simply can’t help but empty your foul, yet largely ineffectual, keyboard musk glands here at Mitch’s blog–apparently once per comment thread, since you can’t be bothered to come back and respond to your own ass being battered by numerous commenters–could you simply boil it down to “FIRST!” or “PRESENT!” thereby saving the rest of us the effort of having to scroll past your literary diarrhea?

I mean, I like having a strong index finger as much as any father who has to follow his toddler around with a can of Lysol, but your mental dingleberries here have caused me to wear through at least four mouse scroll wheels, and that just becomes prohibitively expensive.

I realize you have an inflated sense of self-importance–an affliction you share with literally millions of technologically inept computer monkeys who discovered they can fling nonsensical, rambling, poorly-DailyKos-sourced turd balls into the non-discriminating world of comment threads–but the reality is, when you click “Submit Comment,” the rest of us can plainly see you’re a loon. Not just a loon, mind you, but an obsessive-compulsive loon who is completely incapable of A) coherent thought and B) doing anything other than commenting endlessly and meaninglessly within online comment threads.

I know it probably makes you feel good in some sort of nondescript way, and it may even give you sense of accomplishment, both of which you could obtain by maybe running two or three miles, or completing a puzzle, either of which wouldn’t result in dozens of people or more wondering if maybe you’d benefit from some serious psychological help.

    Something to think about, mmkay?

  26. Regarding Dayton, his compromise is simply based on 10% increases in spending annually, is it not–and his original proposal was based on something like 15% increases in spending annually.

The GOP budget proposal increases the State budget from 31 billion to 34 billion which is about a 9.6 percent increase. If Dayton really wanted a 15 percent increase, then it would seem that the GOP already met him more than half-way simply by having the State spend within its means.

  27. Something to think about, mmkay?

Gotta have a brain to think with. DogPrescottPile is lost in the land of Oz, looking for Scarecrow to get some of his.

  28. Didn’t CrazyEyes himself, ask legislature to vote against the budget he, himself, proposed?

  29. TBS: Ben has repeatedly estimated that by Halloween we will have a Governor Prettner-Solon. Wouldn’t that be something?

Bill yes I have, and if anyone cares to hear my explanation to why again here it is; I, like governor Dayton, have suffered with some severe mental illness issues over my lifetime (funny it wasn’t brought up by the media before the election, or after, but I digress) and unlike me he’s an alcoholic, a well documented one at that. Not a smear on him just look at his Hazleden records for christ sakes. But here’s why, he is very fragile mentally right now I can see it when he talks to the press (kind of one of those it takes one to know one situations) he’s about ready to relapse and it could be as soon as August, Halloween at the latest. I would honestly be stunned if he’s still our governor come Jan 1st 2012 but hey I could be wrong. If SEIU turns on him once government shuts down and the legislative republicans hold firm (as they have SO FAR) expect Dayton to snap in a matter of days. He bit off a lot more than he could chew this time.

  30. Ben, there is a definite pattern to Dayton’s alcohol and mental health issues. He works hard to achieve something (High marks at Yale, various party and public offices), it doesn’t give him the boost in self-esteem he thought it would, and this is soon followed by depression and drinking. You can set your watch by it.

  31. There’s a Jim Beam bottle being drained on Summit Ave. right now. Governor Moonshine wanted to be governor, senator, attorney general, secretary of state, a fireman and Roy Rogers. He can buy government positions, but when it comes to preforming….oopsy-daisy.
Like I said before, this is what happens when you elect a trust fund baby governor.

  32. You are probably right Brad. It wouldn’t do Edwards any good to be seen cavorting with the known criminal element known as the WI Democratic Party.

  33. The GOP must not bend in any way to the hollow shell that is Mad Mark. He’s going to own the shut down and those that put him into office will pay the price for having done so. His appointment of a “mediator” demonstrates his lack of any leadership ability, and in general his cowardice. I’m convinced that soon he’s going come apart at the seems, probably before August. ABM can throw all the add money their deep pockets can afford, their going to own the outcome as much as dismal wretch that is the Gov.

  34. “Leadership” and Mark Dayton are like matter and anti-matter. But the DFL is part of a much larger problem. Look at the bubble head the DNC put at the top: Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. A more vacuous head has never graced that vaunted position.

  35. “If you simply can’t help but empty your foul, yet largely ineffectual, keyboard musk glands here at Mitch’s blog–apparently once per comment thread, since you can’t be bothered to come back and respond to your own ass being battered by numerous commenters–could you simply boil it down to “FIRST!” or “PRESENT!” thereby saving the rest of us the effort of having to scroll past your literary diarrhea?”

    **sigh**

    Such projection…

    **sigh**

Yossarian, what’s there for Dog Gone to respond to?

  36. Pfft.

I comment here only when DG’s voluminous offal finally boils over and I simply must vent.

DG, on the other hand, is pathological.

  37. So, Les, what you’re saying is it isn’t Dayton’s fault that he can’t fullfill his obligations as Governor. Thanks.
